Jolley Hotel

The location is perfect, and the staff were professional and polite. The building is brand new, nicely decorated and spotlessly clean. I’ve stayed twice and been very satisfied both times. Jolley has the feel of an apartment complex along with hotel benefits: breakfast, free amenities, housekeeping and free wifi, plus plenty of living space and practical furnishings. There are also kitchen appliances, including a cooker, microwave oven, dishwasher and freezer, as well as cutlery, pots and pans. I can definitely recommend it.

The room itself wasn’t bad, but I’d avoid breakfast. The bed was comfortable and I slept well, the bathtub was a welcome feature, and the AC units were strong. The bathroom exhaust was weak. The elevators were slow, though roomy enough not to feel claustrophobic. Bedroom sliding doors gave good privacy, and the large fridge, water boiler and washer-dryer were useful. The TV was all in Chinese with no English subtitles, so it was useless to us. Cleaning staff were amazingly nice, polite and accommodating, and the front desk staff were also very nice, helpful and polite. Five stars for both groups. As a healthcare provider, I found what I saw at breakfast unsightly. The two women at the breakfast lounge wore the same blue gloves for hours, from the time they arrived until they finished work. I watched those gloves touch food tongs and dragon fruit directly, then clean garbage, dirty dishes and utensils, and tables with chemicals. They also handled the inside of coffee cups and orange juice glasses, touched bread and new plates, and lifted and rearranged baby and dining chairs. I saw them do all this and more without changing gloves. It looked like cross-contamination, and after seeing it I didn’t feel the food was safe to eat. I wouldn’t recommend breakfast until staff are trained in food hygiene. One star for the breakfast buffet.

The rooms are comfortable, and having a washer and the option of two bedrooms makes this place feel more like an Airbnb for larger families. The front desk staff were friendly. But breakfast staff hygiene was a serious problem. Sitting at the table, I watched them use the same gloves to pick garbage up off the floor, move furniture, clean the food table, touch the inside of supposedly clean cups and bowls, and handle oranges for fresh juice. Who knows what they touch in the back room? It was disgusting, and I felt you were bound to get sick eating there. We also booked for three people, but the room only had two pairs of slippers, two mugs and other supplies for two.

The supermarket right across the street is handy for everyday items, especially the wide food selection. Our room was spacious, with a basic kitchen, washing machine and small balcony. Housekeeping staff were very friendly, while the front desk was just okay. Be careful on the stairs between the living room and bedroom. There are stairs throughout the hotel, and when I asked reception, they said only one room had none. The carpet is beige, and the stairs have no special color grading or markings. Even with the nightlight, they were hard to see at night. I hope the hotel improves this, since it would be awful if someone got hurt. The hotel was fairly quiet at night, but there was a constant startling noise, perhaps from the AC or something else. Earplugs didn’t block it. Staff said it was an uncontrollable mechanical issue. I strongly hope they fix it. On 10/13, I thanked them for their response and repeated that I hoped they could address the noise and the unclear stair sight lines.
