Foxfields Country Hotel

The restaurant was a highlight, with generous portions of food cooked perfectly and really good service. The team seemed to care about what they do. My suite was huge, with a separate living room, bedroom and bathroom, and the garden view made the morning feel relaxing. The large bath was great for a long soak, and there was plenty of hot water for it and the rain shower. The shower head is fixed at an awkward angle, though. Some rooms have had a lovely modern update, while mine could use some TLC. It looked like work was planned. A few small practical things got in the way. The website advertises room service, but you have to order and pay at the restaurant before they deliver. They were happy to take an order by phone, but there was no room phone, restaurant number or menu in the room. I couldn’t charge food to my room either, so the restaurant seems to operate separately. There were lots of mirrors, but none let you see the back of yourself. Tea and coffee options were basic, there was only a trouser press rather than an iron and board, and the fridge cupboard was screwed shut. Without a room phone it wasn’t straightforward to ask reception for an iron. The hotel has real charm and potential, and I’d happily return. Sorting those details would make it somewhere people seek out.

I was there on New Year’s Eve to photograph a wedding held at the hotel. I ate at the restaurant that evening and was really impressed by both the food and service. The lamb shank with seasonal vegetables and chunky chips was perfect. I’d come back when I’m not working, too.

Rooms vary, and some can be pretty dated depending on which one you book. If you’re not fussy about that, it’s a great place for parties and events. The staff were amazing and looked after us well from reception through to the restaurant.

Lovely place to stay for work. The food is outstanding, and the staff are so friendly, attentive and lovely. I’ll definitely stay again.
