This is a mixed account from a couple who stayed for two nights. The best thing is the location: Chester Market is about a five-minute walk away, the Cathedral is five minutes away, and the main city is around seven minutes on foot. The building is a period property, the bar is nice, and the staff were friendly and helpful. There’s no car park, and the nearest one is about a ten-minute walk and costs roughly £10 a day. It isn’t cheap for what you get. The bathroom was very large for the small, functional room, and the shower was excellent. The room itself was cold, but the plug-in heater warmed it up. There were only four mismatched hangers in the wardrobe, which wasn’t great for getting ready, and the TV was tiny, though hopefully you don’t spend long in the room. Reception is in the bar area. We had to wait because no reception staff were there, so a bar worker came over to check us in. He was friendly, but gave us a key while the cleaner was still in the room. We went for a beer and came back after.

My partner and I came for lunch to celebrate our anniversary. The pub felt cosy and welcoming, and the service was friendly and quick. The food was delicious, with that nice home-cooked taste you don’t always get in a pub. We’ll definitely be back, thank you!

We stopped for a meal and were really glad we did. The braised feathered beef with mash, kale and beef dripping gravy was a real treat: the beef melted in my mouth, the mash was sublime, and the gravy brought it all together beautifully. My wife had the steak and ale pie, generously filled with tender beef in a hearty pastry crust. The chips were nice too. We also enjoyed the real ales, and had a really good pint or three. Highly recommended.

The rooms are spacious, with all the amenities you’d expect, and the beds are very comfortable. The bathroom is large and has a great shower. It’s right in the city centre, which is a perfect location. The food is a little pricey, but the quality is amazing, so I think it’s worth it. I’d recommend the chicken liver pate and sticky toffee pudding. I’ll definitely be back soon.

This is one of my favourite pubs and inns. We stayed here a while back, and Madge loves the old-world character. The food is excellent, there’s a great choice of beer, and they even have their own microbrewery in the cellar.
