The breakfast was a highlight, with pastries, fruit and cereal laid out for self-service, plus high-quality cooked dishes you could order. The staff were good, and the place has a lovely traditional feel. Our room was spacious and had good facilities, including robes, slippers, an iron and board, a pod coffee machine and a kettle. The shower was good too. It’s easy to walk to the main sights, while the area itself stays quiet. I’d suggest asking for a higher-floor room.

Arriving late, we were greeted warmly by the desk staff and felt welcome straight away. We loved the atmosphere and were glad we stayed here. Our second-floor king room had a design we really liked, with an old-fashioned feel and modern touches. We had no noise issues in room #2. If you’re booking through hotel sites, I’d suggest choosing a king room so you’re on a higher floor.

We had dinner here and enjoyed it a lot. Since it’s a private club, staying guests can use the restaurant and bar, and the prices were good. We visited in December 2024 and had a really nice stay. The rooms felt a little dated, but they were cosy and charming for that time of year.

The location is good and it’s a quirky place in several ways, but there wasn’t much else to like. Our room was poky, and the accommodation felt overpriced, like much of Edinburgh. We stayed on a Wednesday and the music was so loud at 11 pm that I could hear the lyrics. If you’re fine with small rooms and banging music late at night, perhaps it’ll suit you. A youth hostel would be similar, but cheaper.

I went for a workshop Christmas function and really liked the venue. The regimental connection is fascinating, with lots of displays on the walls. There’s a nice range of whiskies, including my favourite.
