The canal displays about its construction were really interesting, and the views were lovely. We stopped for breakfast with our dogs while walking the Great Glen Way. The Highland Breakfast was cracking, and we had tea followed by coffee. Such a bright, fresh place to eat, too.

The soup of the day was delicious, and the tuna and cheese baked potato was just as good. We dropped in for lunch while visiting Fort Augustus. The seating area was clean, the staff were friendly, and the food came out quickly and hot. Finished with a little festive empire biscuit and a mocha. I was pleasantly surprised and would definitely come back.

We stayed in one of the Airbnb rooms on the second night of a road trip with friends. It was a lovely, quiet spot by Loch Ness, and Hamish, the housekeeper we met in the morning, was very nice and gave us suggestions for our Scotland trip. A great stay, and I’d recommend it to anyone visiting the Highlands.

The cafe has a pretty view of the rushing river and a clean bathroom. It’s right in the middle of town, across from the cruise, so handy for walking around. There’s a good choice of breakfast, lunch and drinks at reasonable prices. The cafe is also connected to a small canal education space, a cute souvenir shop and a cashmere store.

My grandmother and I stopped at the Caledonian Canal Centre Cafe for lunch during a Timberbush day trip. The chilli topping was watery, runny and tasteless, and after the mix-up with my order we won’t be back. I’d asked for a baked potato with beef chilli and cheddar, but they gave me vegan chilli without warning. I ate most of it before noticing and didn’t want to make a scene. No one told us the beef chilli had run out, and they labelled the vegan topping as beef. I’m allergic to the vegan alternative and can’t eat plant-based meats because they upset my stomach. The next morning I had terrible diarrhoea and sickness, and felt more uncomfortable than I ever have. If you have an allergy to vegan alternatives, stay away and eat somewhere else.
