The George Hotel

Carl and Charlotte made our evening at The George especially enjoyable. They’re always welcoming, attentive, thoughtful and respectful. The bar was packed, but they worked hard and kept everyone happy. We love that we can bring my dog, and the comfy chairs and bar stools are a bonus too. Thanks, chaps, for a lovely evening. We’ll be back.

We had an excellent dinner and an equally delicious full English breakfast, with professional and helpful staff throughout. Our room was attractively decorated and had the amenities we needed to a satisfactory standard. The hotel is refurbishing its bedrooms. The setting is beautiful, and you can see the river and gardens from the bar and restaurant. It was a fabulous one-night stay, and we’d definitely recommend it. Looking forward to returning in spring for those lovely views.

The food and drinks are expensive, and dinner was the main disappointment. I ordered the vegetable Wellington with mash and green beans. It was a flavourless root vegetable pasty, microwaved, and it made me long for Greggs. The food wasn’t even hot, and there was a skin on the mash, so who knows how long it had been sitting there. The hotel is in an ideal spot beside a beautiful stretch of river, and they’re making a real effort to renovate an ageing building laid out like a rabbit warren. The swimming facilities were closed for refurbishment. Breakfast was included and offered a good choice. I’d stay again, but skip dinner.

The staff were lovely, but the room really disappointed us. We’d booked a birthday treat after a horrendous six months health-wise, and wanted to enjoy the view from our room. Instead, we faced a stretch of mud, a derelict greenhouse and a pile of rubbish. I understand that not every room can overlook the river, but this view spoiled the time we spent in the room.
