The restaurant was the highlight for us. On our first night, Mum's venison and beef dish was a standout, though my lemon sole meunière in the lovely little 20-cover room was terrific too. The next evening we had the Chateaubriand in the ballroom, cooked to the chef's liking, which meant a perfect medium rare, with tomatoes, pave potatoes, onion rings and peppercorn sauce. It's a dish where mistakes are hard to hide, and the chef clearly knows what he's doing. The lamb rib starter, three glazed chops cooked rare, was the best thing I've eaten in years. The hotel is right beside Pitlochry Train Station, with an old-fashioned, twee feel, patterned carpets, leather wingback chairs and painted wallpaper. They seem to have put money into staff rather than modernising, and everyone we met, from reception to the kitchen, was friendly, well trained and knew their stuff. Our room was spacious and recently decorated, and the huge smart TV was a nice extra. The shower tap was another story, it took Geoff Capes strength to turn it off. We appreciated the coffee pod machine.

We had a good stay and the breakfast was nice. The shops in town were friendly too, and nothing spoiled my husband's birthday. There were a couple of service issues, though. When we arrived on 25 February for his birthday, the receptionist was dealing with our booking when her personal phone rang. She answered it and left us standing there for about five minutes, until another receptionist came over. That felt rude. We also had no hand wash in either bathroom bottle for both days, so I had to use the shower gel I'd brought. When we left, I handed in the key and said goodbye, but got no reply as the receptionist started talking to a staff member. We'd chosen Fishers over McKays Hotel, but I think it will be our last visit.

Jorge served us dinner and was such a kind, lovely gentleman. He made our stay even better. We spent one night here recently, had a great time, and will definitely come back.

Charging our electric car was the one part of the stay that left us frustrated. The website gives a flat overnight rate of £30, but when charging finished, we got a text saying an idle charge of 25p per minute would apply while we stayed plugged in. We were on our way back from the event just before 11pm, and by the time we got to the car the app showed we'd paid nearly £7 extra. The hotel may not run the chargers, but guests should be told about the extra cost. If we'd been further away, it could have become expensive. We tried to move the car when we returned, but there were no free bays, and the other charging spots had non-electric cars in them despite the signs. Aside from that, we enjoyed our time in Pitlochry and would happily return to Fishers Hotel. We've stayed a few times and each visit has been a positive one. We're a couple in our 40s, and this was an overnight double room for the local enchanted forest event. The staff welcomed us warmly as usual and explained dinner, breakfast and parking. Our room was clean and had the expected tea, coffee and shower products. Some upgrading was underway, but it didn't affect our stay and I'm sure it'll look lovely when finished. Dinner and breakfast were both easy going, well organised, and offered a good range of choices.

The staff were wonderful and the location is great, which makes the state of the hotel all the more disappointing. It was extremely run down, with damage and dirt as well as dated decor, and there was construction work. Some carpets were covered in Sellotape. Given how many tourists the place must see, it's a shame. It does the lovely town of Pitlochry a huge disservice.
