The strangest feature was the old courtyard ice machine. Once you pushed the button, it kept dispensing until it was empty, leaving a little Matterhorn of ice. It was pretty funny. Maiya checked us in and was super friendly and helpful. We’d booked directly and reserved a second-story room, but they had planned to give us a lower-level one. Once I pointed that out, they gave us the upper-level room we’d booked. This was our second three-night August stay, two years after our first, when we’d also booked at the last minute. The Cannon Beach Collection, which is a group of four hotels, often seems to have last-minute vacancies. Our room, #21, showed its age. The bed was nice, but one outlet was so worn that plugs fell out. The hot tub light was about 1 watt and nearly useless. The oddly shaped room didn’t have a good spot for the TV, and the TV and cable box were a mess to operate with two remotes, or three if you count the DVD remote. The hotel is old and pet-friendly, and the dog situation became a real problem. The day before checkout, guests left their dog alone on a fenced lower-level patio for the day, where it barked constantly. I complained to the front desk. When they came back, they were warned, then left again with the patio door open. The dog kept barking while a hotel employee shoveled the ice pile. Soon a crowd gathered outside by the patio, including people from the neighboring house watching from their balcony and several hotel guests on the street by the beach. It was just after a beautiful sunset, and Maiya and her boyfriend were there. She said the guest had been evicted and that she was waiting for them to go, or the police would be called. The dog owners finally left. Maiya apologized and promised a free bottle of wine, but never followed up. That night, the hot tub stopped working and the jets wouldn’t turn on. So the stay was entertaining but badly flawed. We won’t book a pet-friendly hotel again, including this one.

We first came here in the 90‘s, when it was fairly new, and stayed year after year. The spacious, clean rooms, prompt room service, inner courtyard and library, plentiful parking, and just a few steps to the beach made it a favorite. We hardly ever used the courtyard or library, though. We later tried some other places for comparison. A few were cheaper, and you could tell the difference. When we returned years later, the rooms and property showed wear. It’s still a good place, but it didn’t feel the way we remembered, and I had to lower the room rating. I wish management would make some upgrades.

We had to move our reservation to a different weekend, and the staff were incredibly helpful about it. We switched from the Mcbee cottages to the courtyard. The room was beautiful, with a handy little kitchenette, a fireplace, and a sitting area. The courtyard had a charming, welcoming feel, and the ocean was only a two minute walk away. I highly recommend staying here.

The new owners have refreshed each room while keeping that relaxed beach feeling. I loved the new mattress, the best hotel mattress I’ve slept on. The Courtyard was lovely and spotless, and the customer service was excellent. At 8 PM I clumsily knocked down the seven foot curtain over the sliding door. I called the front desk, and Mindy arrived in less than five minutes with a step stool and a big smile. She fixed it quickly while we chatted and laughed, and made me feel like helping me was exactly where she wanted to be. I had a great stay and highly recommend the place.

The Courtyard looks charming from the outside, and the location near Cannon Beach is pristine, but our room was a disappointment. We left early, very unhappy with the stay. The room was meant for three people, but we had to move furniture just to unfold the twin bed, and it wasn’t made. The queen bed was the most uncomfortable we’d ever slept in, and the pull-out wasn’t much better. We couldn’t reach the front desk using the room phone, so getting a pillow and towels for our third guest meant long walks. A sign said not to use the fireplace. The sliding door and window were very hard to open and close, and the ice machine made noise but no ice. We’d asked about access to the beach when booking because one of us is disabled. They assured us it was an easy walk from The Courtyard with no steps or hills, but the closest route was a dark, tunnel-like staircase. Before leaving, we told the desk clerk about these issues. She took notes and said the owners would call or email us. That was days ago, and we still haven’t heard anything.
