Great Western Inn & Suites

After an 11-hour drive on my way to Las Vegas, I was exhausted and stopped here for rest. Instead, for $107 a night, I got an old, musty, disgusting room. It smelled bad as soon as I walked in, there was dust everywhere, and the ceiling tiles were warped and moldy enough to look unsafe. The toilet was tiny, almost like it was made for a child, and as an adult man I found it laughably unusable. The shower rods were rusty and barely hanging on. The whole place felt neglected. If you’re passing through Carlsbad, pay a little more and stay somewhere else. I wish I had. Avoid this motel.

They took away the used bath towels while we were out and left us with none. I’d used one to wipe down my car windows, something I do first thing in the morning wherever I stay, and I’ve never had a problem before. I’d folded it neatly and left it on a dresser. Was taking all the towels their way of punishing us for cleaning the car windows with them?

The pool and hot tub were advertised as heated, but they were empty. Our room wasn’t clean either. When the kids lifted the couch cushions, they found dirt and trash underneath, and there were unknown stains on the bathroom walls. The next morning, the shower had someone else’s hair all over it, so I wasn’t getting in. The toilet had pee stains and hair, and my fiancé woke up with bites. Definitely not worth the price, and I wouldn’t stay again.

The staff were friendly and the pool was nice, but I wouldn’t stay here again. It’s old and run down, and the beds are very hard with flat pillows, so bring your own. We didn’t get enough towels for our group, and the shower handle fell off on my first night. The air conditioning worked great. Breakfast wasn’t good, just waffles, toast, and muffins. For what we paid, it wasn’t worth it. Next time we’ll stay somewhere else.
