I live nearby, about 20 minutes away, and was glad to return to The Umstead for a weekend board retreat. The meeting rooms and catering have been top tier in both years we’ve held it there. The rooms are fantastic, and the robe is the most comfortable one I’ve ever worn. Staff have always been kind, welcoming, and accommodating. They went well beyond what I expected when I asked for a refrigerator after our group dinner, bringing a proper mini fridge. One night I had to sit in the lounge instead of at the downstairs bar, which worked out nicely because Nikki was a fantastic server. The hot cider in the afternoons was delicious after lunch. There was also a brief fire drill or incident that meant the hotel had to be evacuated. It was inconvenient, but seeing the humanity among guests and staff outside was beautiful, especially these days. I’ve heard the spa is divine. I hope to get there one day.

The rooms are beautiful and incredibly comfortable, and Herons is delicious. The Umstead Hotel and Spa has style, class, and luxury all through the inviting hotel and grounds. The moment you step out of your car, it feels like you’ve arrived somewhere completely different. The staff are next level. I’d absolutely choose this for a night away or a special surprise, and I promise you won’t want to leave. Special thanks to the staff on duty 1/18 - 1/19/26. You made my birthday special!

The burger was amazing, but the people were the best part of lunch at Heron's Bar inside the hotel. Manager Kevin, hostess Lilly, and server Thomas were fantastic and made me feel welcome with my service dog. As a Veteran, that isn’t always how it goes. They were sincere and genuinely kind.

The hotel is lovely and dog friendly, which suited us since we had two dogs with us. My wife and I stayed one night, arriving late, so we ordered from the late-night menu. Both meals were surprisingly bad: the smash burger was very overcooked, and the pastrami sandwich didn’t even seem like pastrami. The room also wasn’t set up for two people. There was only one set of towels and one chair, so we couldn’t both sit at the dining cart that night or at breakfast. For the price, the stay was disappointing.

The art throughout the hotel really elevates the experience. We celebrated our anniversary at the hotel and spa, and the staff were friendly, attentive, and went above and beyond to make it feel special and luxurious. Thank you!
