Embassy Suites by Hilton Charleston Historic District

The staff were consistently helpful, but when we raised the condition of our room, all they said was that renovations were coming soon. There wasn’t even an apology, and that did nothing for our stay at the time. The room felt like a worn-out college dorm. Furniture was beat up, the carpet was torn and stained, there was nowhere to hang a bathroom towel, and the mirror above the worn sofa was crooked. Curtains on the window facing the interior were barely attached to the rod, and with no exterior windows the lighting was poor. For what we paid, this was far beyond disappointing. I expect more from an Embassy Suites and much more from Hilton. On 3-7-2026, while I was still staying there, the hotel sent the response below. For service recovery, they wanted me to call a help line and explain the whole problem all over again. That was horrible handling of a customer concern. They had a chance to make it right and failed, so I’ve lowered my rating to 1.

We were unsure after reading the reviews, but went in optimistic and ended up having a great stay. Breakfast had good food and plenty of choices, and the evening happy hour was a nice extra. The room could use some TLC, and valet took a little while, though the wait wasn’t too bad. We loved being able to walk to so many restaurants and shops. It’s a pet-friendly hotel in a historic monument, so the building has some character. We’ll be back.

The Christmas tree in the foyer was beautiful, and the large foyer gave us a nice place to sit outside our room for a while. Being right on King Street also made it easy to explore Charleston on foot. The staff were pleasant when we found them, though on a couple of occasions it took some searching to locate someone. I understand they’re aiming for an old historic feel, but the place came across as run-down and a bit fussy rather than a convincing snapshot of history. Pretty mediocre overall.

The bed was exceptionally comfortable, and we appreciated that pets were welcome as part of the family. The location is excellent, right in the middle of things and close enough to walk to Charleston’s history and culture. The Old Citadel itself is magnificent, with architecture that speaks to the city’s past, and the preservation work is impressive. Inside, though, the decor, rugs, and TVs feel dated and don’t match the grandeur outside. The shower pressure was weak, there was a clump of hair on the shower wall, and the toilet paper holder felt flimsy. One morning an alarm went off at 6:30 AM because a previous guest had set it, which wasn’t a relaxing start. It’s a beautiful property with a lot of heart, but the interior needs renewal.
