After driving 700 miles from Houston to visit family in Dothan, my mother went in to check in while I waited in the car. I came inside later to ask her to bring an extra pillow and towel. As we unloaded the car, the room phone rang. Our children answered, and the caller said he was the hotel manager. When I took the call to discuss the room, he brought up extra fees. My mother had booked through hotels.com in late February, and I didn’t know what fees he meant. He grew impatient and raised his voice, so I firmly asked him to speak respectfully. He said we had to pay or leave, in a tone that felt aggressive. I went to the office to address how he’d continued speaking to me. I paid a $50 deposit with three twenty-dollar bills, but he wouldn’t give me the change. I said I’d call the authorities if it wasn’t sorted out. Only after I contacted them did he return the deposit, and we left to find somewhere else. We found a more comfortable hotel for $100 less than the original cost. The incompetence and disregard I experienced were unacceptable.

The owner was a jerk. He’d already charged my card $100, then demanded another deposit from my daughter without checking whether she was me. He told her to bring him $50 or leave. She didn’t know I’d already paid by card, so she took him the money. His behavior made us decide not to stay, since I could see trouble ahead. We had to call the cops to get her cash back, and I’m still trying to get my own money back. He refused, telling my credit card company that I’d stayed and used their services. Liars! Don’t stay here!

We’d driven 12 hours to get there, only to be told to pay more or leave. The woman at the counter was nice, but the man who came after her was a total jerk. He demanded a second deposit from my daughter, even though she had nothing to do with that part of the trip. When I returned to the office, he wouldn’t explain it to the person renting the room. He also refused to return the extra deposit until we called the cops. Now I’m trying to get the room fees back because he won’t refund them after his lousy attitude and rude behavior. My next call is to my lawyer. I will never, ever go back.

Birdsong from the variety of trees behind where we stayed was a lovely way to start the morning. We slept well and would definitely come back.

Check-in was friendly, and the room was clean and nice. The shower drain backed up almost as soon as I started the water, which wasn’t great. Otherwise, it’s a good, clean hotel.
