We stayed in room one, which was cleaner and more spacious than the online photos suggested. The lake view was lovely, and downtown, canal park, and bentlyville were all walkable. The room had Roku streaming services, bathroom essentials, a hairdryer, plenty of towels, and a standing fan that helped with sleeping. Separate entrances with their own codes were convenient and made me feel secure. A 10/10 stay. I’ll check here first for availability on my next Duluth vacation.
Room 2 was much nicer than I expected from the pictures, and the main building looked a lot less creepy in person, lol. The location is fantastic for the price. We walked to Duluth Trading Co, Hucklebeary, Fitgers, and Portland Malt Shoppe along Superior Street, then back to the inn. Don’t miss Duluth's Best Bread. Canal Park and the aquarium are easy to reach on foot too, using the Slip bridge just past Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory. Parking is very convenient: one free pass right in front, with paid parking everywhere else if you bring another vehicle. I liked the room layout, comfy bed and pillows, and the bar seating by the windows, though it could feel awkward if people were on the patio. There’s a mini fridge, microwave, coffee maker, and a pitcher of water. We also got two BOGO beer coupons from Fitgers, which was a fun treat. My main concern was the location at the end of hotel row, behind a public beach and lakefront path, beside a public bathroom in a small grassy area. Some people hanging around the bathroom looked sketchy. We sat on the front patio for breakfast and walked the lakefront during the day and evening, but at night we stuck to Canal Park Drive as a precaution. We kept the blinds closed when we weren’t in the room, but never felt unsafe on the first floor. Just stay aware of your surroundings, especially at night. There’s an outdoor sauna on the side patio, which we didn’t use because it felt weird, plus cornhole and a small fire pit with chairs facing Superior. The old building lets you hear upstairs neighbors walking and talking. With the TV on it wasn’t bad, and everyone around us followed the 10pm-8am quiet hours. You need to be self-sufficient here: everything uses key codes, there are no physical keys or cards, and there’s no staff, front desk, or indoor common area on site. For help, you need to call or text between 8am-8pm. Our a/c didn’t work the first night, and the windows don’t open. I texted the next morning, and the manager on duty fixed the issue within a few hours. Thanks Kristin! If it hadn’t been for that sweltering first night and the sketchy people by the park, I’d have given the stay five stars.
Everything else was great, but the bright outdoor lights made it hard to sleep. Room darkening curtains would help a lot, and the supports under the bed need fixing because it sags.
A large deck with lights, tables, a fire pit, and a sauna looks out over beautiful Lake Superior and Duluth. It’s also within walking distance of dozens of good restaurants and shops in Canel Park. The building used to be a train station, and I loved its history. It’s been updated and renovated while keeping a rustic feel that makes it a unique place to stay.
The location alone would bring me back. We stayed two nights and had a wonderful time. The room was very clean, and while there was some noise at times, it was otherwise quiet. I’d definitely stay here again.
