It was closed when I stopped by during the week, so I could only take a few photos of the nice looking interior through the windows. The Christmas decorations looked lovely, and I really wish it had been open. It’s near the edge of Gettysburg, by the battlefield. This used to be a motel, but it has been restored. The plaques give you a good sense of what it was and why the headquarters mattered. They’ve even recreated Austin’s dog house. He was the dog who lived at the Mary Thompson House during the Battle of Gettysburg. The American Battlefield Trust added a section listing everyone who supported the project. It’s a long list, and I’m glad those people chose to support it.

I didn’t get inside this time, but it looks amazing. I’ll go in next time.

I stopped by during the 4th events and even ran into someone local from East TN at the reenactment. It was a great stop, with lots of information about the homeowner and her life.

It’s a wonderful place to visit, and the history is breathtaking. Thinking about what happened here and the lives lost feels overwhelming. Imagining the battle along the fences made this an amazing experience.

I hadn’t visited the headquarters since American Battlefield Trust bought the area, and the rehabilitation has helped me understand the terrain and its effect on the first day of battle. It’s a unique part of Gettysburg history, and well worth your time.
