The room and hotel looked nothing like the pictures. There was water damage in the bathroom, peeling paint on the tub, water stains on the ceiling, dirt piled along the baseboards, a dirty shower curtain, stained linens, glitter on the bathroom walls, and a damaged entry door. There were no non-slip strips in the tub. The pool was closed. The person on duty, who was supposedly the owner, was rude, and there was no customer service. There was an envelope asking for maid service tips, and a sign saying they aren’t responsible for damage or theft. This place gave me the impression it might rent by the hour.

We never even got out of the car. We’d booked one night to come for my father’s funeral, but as soon as we pulled into the lot, we saw police searching a vehicle and transients hanging around. It felt very sketchy, and the property looked nothing like the pictures on any site. We took the loss and drove another 20 minutes to find somewhere we felt safe. I’ve never been so glad we moved away from this area.

After being assured several times that a late arrival was fine, we reached the hotel and were given a key. We’d called before booking, the next morning, and again before setting out. Upstairs, the room looked uncleaned, with someone’s belongings inside. Then we heard a voice ask who we were and what we were doing. We shut the door right away, apologized, and explained the desk had given us that key. Walking into an occupied stranger’s room could have gone badly. Someone could’ve been hurt. Back downstairs, the clerk said she didn’t know why anyone was in there and couldn’t reach a manager. She called the people in the room to ask when they checked in and who gave them the key. We told her to hang up, because that didn’t change what had happened. She finally said they were overbooked, another room had no TV, and she’d given away ours. She barely apologized. She offered a room at the Super 8 around the corner, saying they “own both,” but we hadn’t booked a motel. When we asked for a refund or some concession, she said no. After more discussion she called a manager, spoke English, then switched languages while we stood there. We said that wasn’t acceptable and that both nights should be comped. She wrote a statement saying she’d handle it, and I had to remind her to include the overbooking, TV issue, and that our room had been given away. At the other hotel, the man at the desk was already defensive and rude when I asked how the refund would work. I got my husband and aunt from the car, then we explained it again and showed him the statement. He acted as if we were trying to scam them and said we were late. We repeated that we’d called several times before and during our 7 hour drive to confirm that arriving late was okay. He phoned the first clerk on speaker and immediately started speaking another language. I told him this was exactly what had happened at the first hotel and asked him to speak English because we weren’t stupid. When the clerk switched back, she confirmed what she’d told us and what she’d written. It turned out the hotel wasn’t issuing the refund. The employee sent us the money herself by Cash App because management wouldn’t handle it properly. The man knew she’d sent it personally and still gave us attitude instead of apologizing. At 5am, after all that, we still had to relocate, argue over common sense, and deal with piss poor service. The next morning, the room didn’t even have an iron or ironing board. Wyndham, y’all should reimburse your employee Kay for the money she Cashapped us. Kay took more responsibility than the manager, who was aggressive and defensive and willing to throw her under the bus over an overbooked hotel. That’s unacceptable.

The price was reasonable, and the location was very convenient, close to downtown with coffee shops a short walk away. The room was clean and the bed comfortable enough. Breakfast was bare minimum, but the stay was acceptable.

The waffle maker was a mess, but that didn’t stop my folks from giving it a try, and the waffles were actually pretty good. Breakfast otherwise was barely more than cheap bread and a gallon jug of milk. The rooms were dirty, and the car wash vacuums outside ran constantly. It got quieter once the car wash closed. The friendly service kept this from being a 2 star stay. The Stranger Things tour and downtown were nearby, probably walkable. The value was okay. I’d try another motel if I came back, though if I had it to do over, I’d stay another night.
