Birchwood Inn

We paid a lot more for this than for much better hotel and B&B stays we've had. There was no breakfast on site unless you wanted to drive to The Constance. The room was average at best, the shower amenities hadn't been refilled, basic maintenance seemed neglected, and there was no one around. This was one of the worst lodging experiences we've had. It is not a three-star hotel.

Tom made us feel very welcome during our one-night stay in early March, and his tips about the area really improved our short visit. My husband and I had a wonderful time and hope to return soon. The rooms were very spacious, and we could use the common areas with the COVID precautions in place. Breakfast was delicious, with a great vegetarian option for us.

I left a personal item in our room, and the staff found it right away and shipped it to me. That kind of help was great. The Dewey itself was a fantastic place to stay, A++++! The house is beautiful, and you can feel its history throughout. I loved the living room with its books and piano. Lenox is a lovely town with great restaurants and stores, and Edith Wharton's home, The Mount, is stunning and only about five minutes away.

We enjoyed our stay, and the price was hard to beat, especially for a long weekend. Still, a few things are worth knowing. Our Birchwood Suite at The Dewey was on the second floor of the carriage house, which wasn't stated in the description. Keep that in mind if you're bringing a toddler or need accessible accommodations. The room was spacious and clean, and the closet was roomy enough for our son's pack ‘n play. With its open door, the closet worked like a little nook. The fireplace was a lovely touch, though the couch was quite worn. The bathroom was enclosed by a sliding door with no latch, which was okay for adults but less convenient with a two-year-old running around. Given that there was a kitchenette, it would've been nice to have even a basic coffee maker in the room. Breakfast was at The Constance, a drive away, and amounted to a few muffins, grocery-store bagels, and coffee, though the space itself is beautiful. We messaged through the portal about a small fridge leak and never got a response. It eventually stopped, so it was fine, but the lack of service would've been a problem if it had turned into something bigger. We also sent several messages before booking without getting a response.
