Hilton Checkers Los Angeles

I’ve stayed at Hilton Checkers several times and always found the staff warm and friendly. The food at 1927 restaurant is tasty, and the recently renovated rooms have been clean and comfortable. I often attend events at the Biltmore Hotel, but prefer staying here, just across the street from the Biltmore and Pershing Square, with good restaurants and bars around the corner. It’s a convenient downtown spot. Valet parking is required, and the team could be more efficient, though parking can be a challenge downtown. A great choice when I need to be in the area.

The rooms were very clean, but there was no microwave, only coffee, and several outlets didn’t work, including both bathroom GFCI outlets. The AC return chirped like a bird nonstop. It’s an old building, which I knew when booking, but when I mentioned the noise at checkout, the employee asked if I’d told anyone, then moved straight to asking whether I wanted a paper receipt. I wasn’t trying to complain, just thought maintenance should know. The website was misleading about food and the rooftop. There was a $28 breakfast buffet each morning, but otherwise little food, just a small bar snack menu. The bartender was nice but overwhelmed, serving the whole area as well as bartending. The rooftop terrace was advertised as a bar and grill, but we were told it wasn’t open “this time of year,” despite the 75-85 degree weather all weekend. Safety and security weren’t an issue. There are good nearby places: a great café across the street, Karl Strauss Brewer was very good, and Louis Bottega is within walking distance with great pizza and reasonably priced drinks. Water Grill is close, but my wife doesn’t like shellfish, so it wasn’t for us. Do not go to CASEY'S IRISH PUB. It was dirty, smelly, and full of trash. The bartender seemed clueless about the selection and said the cook hadn’t been seen in two days and they didn’t know where he was. I ordered Eagle Rare with a cube, had to point her to the bottle, and she put in two pieces of machine ice. The person next to me asked for Fireball, was told they had none, then pointed out an unopened bottle on the bar.

I’ve stayed here a couple of nights and the customer service has consistently been excellent. Checkout this morning was different. I asked Alex at the front desk to call for my valet, as other staff had done during my stay, but he told me to go outside and said they’d take care of it. The words weren’t necessarily rude, but his tone and body language felt dismissive and unprofessional. I’m sharing this because everything else about my experience has been very positive.

The rooms aren’t huge, but they’re comfortable and big enough, and the bathroom is quite nice for the price. Staff were very friendly. There’s free coffee in the lobby in the morning, though I’d hoped to use the credit included with the daily room fee for an espresso. That wasn’t an option unless I sat down. I’ll stay again when work brings me to downtown LA.
