Melrose Hostel

The rooftop deck was a nice surprise, and the place was clean. Breakfast was basic, with bread, cereal, coffee, and fruit. People were considerate about noise, aside from one loud snorer, which isn't the hostel's fault. Maybe they could have a room just for snorers? It's a centrally located hostel by LA standards, and about what you'd expect from one.

The staff made a great impression, they were friendly and ready to help. The facilities were clean and looked well cared for, and the roof terrace was a good place to relax before or after exploring. It's handy for a stop between outings, with central Hollywood in walking distance and good public transport for getting around. For backpacking, travel, or just needing an affordable no-frills stay, it worked really well. I'd come back.

Such a cute place, and the staff and decorations are lovely. The shower room is a little small, but the hot water comes on right away and stays hot. I had two roommates who snored, so the free earplugs at reception were a lifesaver. You can spot the Hollywood sign from the rooftop, and there's free coffee in the morning. The kitchen has a proper stove and everything needed for cooking, though I didn't use it. There's a pool table too. Great place to stay!

The amenities were good, including nice showers with shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel, plus a bidet in the women's bathroom. The location was great, especially for getting to Weho. We barely saw staff, and it didn't feel like a community at all. We'd just come from SF pacific tradewinds, which was amazing, so maybe the difference made this feel more jarring. One staff member made us uncomfortable, and by the end my companion and I avoided eye contact so he wouldn't talk to us. There were two of us and it was okay, but I'm not sure I'd feel safe here alone as a young woman. The coffee and cereal provided were good, though non-dairy milk would be nice. Everything, including the cups and cutlery, was disposable, which felt wasteful, and we didn't see recycling. It did the job, thanks.
