Red Roof Inn Merrillville

A nice guy out front gave me hot water for tea on our last morning, but the desk staff were unhelpful about the problems and acted like they were our fault. The bathroom doorknob didn’t work, the walls and floors had tears and deep scuff marks, and in room 111 you could see a leak from top to bottom on the inside of the room door. The microwave was broken and the advertised breakfast wasn’t available anymore. The top dresser drawer had tobacco crumbs, two cigars, and other trash, even though this was a NO SMOKING ROOM. There was more trash and even a dirty washcloth behind the bedside table. The bedside lamp was missing a screw at the top, so the shade moved when touched. No more Red Roof Inn for me.

Check-in and checkout were smooth, and the clean room had a microwave and fridge, though the fridge’s top section needed defrosting. My heat went out around 9am with what sounded like a pop. I went to the front desk to check out at 9:30 am, before the scheduled chk out 10 am, but no one was there. I called and heard the phone ringing in the office. I guess they don’t have 24 hour service, which nobody told me.

The smell was awful as soon as we walked in, and the room was dim. The lights above the beds didn’t work, but we could still see stains and stuff on the comforter and pillows. There was no toilet paper, and everything looked dirty. We’d found the other hotels in the area sold out, so when Red Roof Inn said it had 1 room available, we went to look. The desk refunded the $110 they charge per night. We slept in our vehicle at the next rest stop instead. Worst hotel I’ve ever seen.

The shower had hot water and worked fine, but the mini fridge never got cold. The room might have been okay if the door were sealed. Light came through the gap, so it’s no surprise there were roaches.
