Red Roof Inn & Suites Monterey

We were charged USD 25 for the second pet even though our reservation said the fee was USD 15. When we showed the written confirmation, the receptionist was unprofessional and repeated that “those are the rules,” without checking it. We also weren’t given any pet amenities, such as a bed or bowls, and our room was reached by hollow stairs that weren’t suitable for dogs. When we tried to file a complaint at the property, we were told that wasn’t possible and that we had to go through Booking instead. The hotel is in a dark, deserted area that feels unsafe at night. Our room seemed improvised, above reception, as if it might once have been a storage space. The hallways were in very poor shape, with extremely dirty carpets and a persistent marijuana smell, despite the hotel saying smoking isn’t allowed. I had a very negative experience and wouldn’t recommend it.

I was overcharged for parking even though my booking clearly said it was included. When I showed the receipt to the manager, she wouldn’t look at it, was very rude, and kept saying “those are the rules.” She told me I could pay the extra amount or cancel the room with no refund. I contacted Booking.com and the manager’s head office and sent proof. They agreed the fee was included, confirmed I’d been overcharged on-site, and said I’d get a refund. The manager’s lack of care and service was unacceptable. At a minimum, she should have checked the receipt before being rude. If the property and booking site have a communication problem, that’s for them to resolve, not for a guest to “deal with it.” I wouldn’t recommend staying here.

Clean rooms, a great price, and truly friendly service. Those are the things I care about most, and they delivered. Five stars, no question.

I stayed in early October, and everything was pretty good. The bathroom was clean and ready, the room was clean, and the bed was comfortable. The front desk staff were kind and helpful. Sergay at the desk is a great all-around good guy. I’d stay here any time.
