Astoria Inn LaGuardia hotel

My mom and I spent five days here during the first week of December, our first time in NY. The front desk guys were kind and respectful. I also noticed they keep some drinks in a fridge and cups of ramen behind the desk for emergencies. The location worked well for us, about a 10-minute walk to a subway station, with lots of nearby places for meals. Our room was basic but fine for sleeping and taking a hot shower. It did get pretty hot sometimes because of the heater. We also found one cockroach in the bathroom; after we got rid of it, we didn’t see any more. It would’ve been a five-star experience without that unexpected bathroom guest.

Our night was ruined by a broken climate control system and a response from staff that showed little concern. We arrived around 1:00 AM after driving more than eight hours from west virginia, exhausted and needing rest before a critical hospital appointment at 9:00 AM. My wife is a cancer patient and needed proper sleep beforehand. The room was set to 83°F, unbearably hot and stuffy. Breathing was difficult, and we could barely sleep. We tried switching to cooling, but the air conditioning didn’t work. When we called room service, it seemed clear the staff member already knew about the problem, yet they offered no real fix. Their only suggestion was to open the window, even though it was about 13°F outside. We had to keep opening and closing it through the night just to make the room barely tolerable. This was physically exhausting and emotionally distressing, adding needless stress before an important medical visit. The hotel showed no basic consideration for our situation. I strongly don’t recommend staying here, especially if you have medical needs, a long journey, or an important commitment.

I expected the room I’d paid for to be held for my three-night stay, even though our flight arrived Tuesday night and we didn’t reach the hotel until Wednesday morning. I’d paid the full amount a few days in advance so we wouldn’t have to wait until afternoon check-in. I hadn’t been contacted about any cancellation policy. At around 8 AM, the receptionist told me the reservation had been cancelled and I’d been refunded for only two of the three days. Rebooking meant paying a rate 50% higher, plus an early check-in fee. This was outrageous. The property took my money without providing the service, and if it was going to cancel, it should at least have warned me first. I’m adding one star because the reception staff were helpful and friendly.

I recently had a kid, and my dad is staying there while my mom stays with us. The staff are so nice and funny with him, calling him Mr Davis. The place is a little barebones, but the location and people working there make up for it.
