The elevator was out of service almost the whole time. We got to use it once, on the way in, then had to carry all our luggage down the stairs with a disabled friend. I'm recovering from a back injury, and the outage made it worse. I saw several families with elderly people affected too. There was trash throughout every stairwell, and I have videos of the mess and the broken elevator. Our TV didn't work. The front desk lady said she'd "call a friend" to help, then never called back. The continental breakfast was gross, with staff cleaning and eating right there and a dirty broom in front of the bagels. They do sell candy for $5, though! The bathroom was disgusting too. The sink was gross and probably hadn't been cleaned, and the tub was brown and black, so we didn't feel safe showering. It's been over a week since the stay. We've sent numerous emails and called over 20 times, but only got through twice. Someone we spoke with on the phone was beyond rude and HUNG UP ON US. I tried to resolve things amicably, but getting hung up on by a manager is infuriating. There's no customer service, no service at all. It's basically a rats' nest. DO NOT STAY HERE. RUN! You'd be better off without a hotel at all.

We only used the hotel to sleep before spending the day out in the city, and it was a nice stay. The customer service was outstanding, and the place is convenient, clean, and affordable. You get what you pay for, though: the rooms are small, and the building and appliances are old. It's an affordable, convenient choice for a first visit to the city on a low budget.

The location is great, in a lively part of Manhattan. Hudson River Hotel is so hard to notice from the street. Staff are friendly and generally efficient, though the elevator is painfully slow, so be patient. The complimentary breakfast has very limited choices and isn't gluten-friendly. Hallways are all one color, and rooms are compact, with beds taking up most of the floor. Chairs and blinds look tired and worn. The motion sensor that switches on the bathroom light and fan is the most annoying part, especially on a late-night visit. It's a low-frills place to stay.

I've seen reviews saying this hotel is bad, but it wasn't as bad as most of them made it sound. The room was a bit small but solid, with nice, very comfy beds. Higher floors give you a nice view, especially at night. The TV was fine for movies or sports, and the free wifi was great, unlike at some hotels. The room was very clean. Breakfast wasn't bad either, enough to get me through the morning. I'd suggest it if you're visiting.

Both of our reservations were abruptly cancelled, with no explanation beyond cancellation emails. We'd booked this hotel through Airbnb for two separate stays during our New York trip, and this happened while we were literally in line to clear customs. We got refunded, but were offered only £20 as a "goodwill gesture" to help find somewhere else in New York at the last minute. Securing other accommodation with no notice was stressful and expensive. That's completely unacceptable customer service, and it seems the hotel has no regard for guests' travel plans. I'd strongly advise anyone thinking of booking here, directly or through Airbnb, to think twice.
