I’ve stayed at Nine Orchard three times this past year, and the look, amenities, Swan Room and Corner Bar have all been worthy of high praise. My latest visit, 12/14 - 12/16, was a very different experience, and I doubt we’ll return. At check-in, the front desk manager was cold to my wife and me. He said I wouldn’t get my AMEX Travel card benefits because I hadn’t booked through them, even though I’d received those benefits when booking directly with the hotel before. The general manager asked me to rebook on the spot through AMEX Travel so they could cancel the original reservation. I agreed, understanding they wanted to follow policy, but the tension with the desk manager continued. He seemed annoyed by us and didn’t greet or acknowledge us when we passed the desk. He grudgingly moved us from a studio queen to a classic queen. Maybe that was all they could offer with seasonal demand, but it felt personal, especially after I’d received a terrace suite in late February that was beyond what I expected. The interiors may be dreamy, but making guests feel unwelcome isn’t good service.

The design and finish at this hotel are among the best we’ve seen, and it’s clear a lot of thought and money went into them. The location is great, right in the middle of the Lower East Side, with Brooklyn easy to reach and plenty of bars and restaurants nearby. Our letdown was the front desk. For a hotel at this price and quality, the staff there felt underwhelming. They said they’d follow up on a few things when we checked in, but never did. We’ve had much friendlier, more helpful reception at similarly priced NYC hotels, and it matters since they’re the first people you meet and the last you see. Still, we’d definitely come back for the other good parts.

Nine Orchard was our second stop after a few hotels in New York, and it ended up being one of the most memorable. I loved the spacious rooms and the thoughtful, charming furniture, which I believe was done in collaboration with BDDW. The classic, elegant design made the place feel special. Breakfast was delightful, and dinner with my New York friends at the Corner Bar was delicious, with excellent service. The staff were kind and attentive throughout. English isn’t my first language, but they listened patiently and calmly explained things again whenever needed, which made me feel at ease. It was a warm, smooth stay, and a comforting example of genuine hospitality.

The included breakfast lets you order from the menu, which was a nice bonus. Lauren, the concierge, was especially warm and had recommendations for everything. The neighborhood is perfect, the rooms are roomy and well appointed, and the staff made us feel welcome. The vibes were immaculate. I hope to stay here whenever I’m in NYC.

I feel at home here in a way I don’t at other NYC hotels. The rooms are designed with that in mind, and I’m sensitive to feeling uncomfortable away from my own home. Every light can be dimmed, the AC is easy to use, and the sturdy, minimal furniture is easy to clean, so there aren’t neglected spots. I’ve stayed several times and always had a great experience. Reception may be the best group of people I’ve met in all my travels. Everyone is friendly, professional, responsive, and proud of their work. I don’t know how they hire, but they all deserve raises. Serge especially is always on point. The bellboys are thoughtful too, offering to open doors and carry things. Housekeeping is friendly, professional, and quick. They bring cookies and water every evening, a little gesture that makes you feel at home.
