The Modernist Hotel

We’d happily stay again. The family-run feel came through in the friendly, caring service, and the multilingual staff gave useful tips. Check-in was quick. Rooms were clean and stylish, with spacious suites, comfy beds, modern design, and natural light. Our kitchenette had a fridge and microwave that came in handy for snacks, and some rooms have balconies with great Manhattan views. There’s a boutique art-gallery feel with plush touches. The location in the heart of Long Island City on 28th St is fantastic: easy walk to the subway, 10-15 minutes to Manhattan, and close to MoMA PS1, Noguchi Museum, local food, and skyline views. Affordable NYC base without the Midtown chaos. Great value, 5 stars!

The room had lots of natural light and a very comfortable bed. It was a modern, pleasant place near the upper east side, about 20 minutes from the upper east side and convenient for visiting a family member at Sloan Kettering. Having a separate living room and bedroom mattered for our baby, and it’s hard to find that in an NYC hotel at a somewhat affordable price. Staff were lovely and accommodated early check-in, setting up a travel crib. The bathroom was just okay, very minimal, and didn’t have a walk-in shower. Cleaning could’ve been better: there was hair, dust, paint chips, an old sock, and a bloody/dirty stain on the pack and play. The partner garage offers parking for $15 a day with a discount. Overall, a comfortable stay.

The location was the only good part, a 4 out of 5. There’s no parking onsite, so you have to find the garage 10 minutes away. At check-in the desk woman asked us to wait a minute, then disappeared and came back 16 minutes later. No food or service, and you get only the room. There’s a balcony, but smoking isn’t allowed on it, which made it pointless for us. The experience felt like renting an air bnb. Everything besides the location was terrible, all 1 star. Wouldn’t recommend.

The staff were super friendly and welcoming, and the rooms are big, maybe bigger than I needed. They’d work well if you have a lot of stuff or want a kitchenette. But there are no blackout curtains, come on. Street noise was manageable, though I could hear neighbors, especially in the hallway. The location is fine, in a moderately funky part of LIC, with the subway reasonably close. I had a nice stay and would recommend it.
