The Redbury’s location is great. We walked everywhere and didn’t need to use the Metro, and there’s a Starbucks just around the corner for breakfast. In New York, though, you turn a corner and find another Starbucks, so that’s not saying much. One receptionist did recommend The crooked knife across the road, and we loved it. We were there for five days, and events in the restaurant and bar took place on three of them, so we didn’t get to try either during our stay. The hotel was busy over the Christmas period, but we still got a reasonably priced room that fit four of us. The decor was lovely, the sheets were soft and clean, and the beds very comfortable. There were some things that could be better. Light sleepers may hear noise from outside and from neighbors above and below. Our room was at the end of the corridor, so people passing by weren’t an issue. The desk light and built-in charger had been temporarily fixed with an extension lead after the outlet stopped working. It’s a small thing, but it made me wonder if maintenance and upkeep are being handled closely. The carpet corners were dusty too. Reception staff were efficient and mostly friendly. At check-in, though, I got what I call “efficient unfriendly” service, with the usual answers delivered by someone who knew the job but didn’t seem to care much. The positives outweighed the negatives. We enjoyed staying at the Redbury and will definitely be back.

My mother and I were really disappointed by the room. The carpets were bumpy, the air conditioning was loud and unruly, the beds uncomfortable, and the lodging and hallways felt dreary. There was no hot water for tea, no cups, no counter space, slow service even in an emergency, and poor communication between staff. I called at 6:38AM asking for ice for my swollen foot. By 7:27AM, after several calls and my mother asking at the lobby as she left for LGA, I still had none. At 7:30AM I hobbled to a nearby Starbucks for ice. One of the restaurants also gave me some because I couldn’t rely on staff communication. The hotel lobby and its two restaurants are nice, but that didn’t make up for the room. We were first put next to a tenant who had taped negative messages all over her door. The bathroom in that room was impossibly small. They moved us, but the second room still had no counter space, so my mother and I had to put our things on the floor. The hotel looked pretty, cozy, and chic online, so I’d even changed hotels the day before to stay here. I wanted to like it, but it felt like a weird old, supposedly “historic” hotel that needed updating beyond the lobby. The phone concierge and lobby need to communicate better, especially in emergencies. At $250 a night, I can’t recommend this NYC hotel. :/

The restaurant draws plenty of locals and does great pizzas, so it’s usually full. I spent two weeks here in January. The location is great and the place has a lot of appeal, but it’s hard to find a quiet spot anywhere in the hotel. Rooms can be noisy too, especially from the air conditioning and heating system. If you’re sensitive to noise like me, bring earplugs. The staff were always friendly and efficient.

There’s a lot of historic New York charm here, with a modern feel, wallpaper that calls back to the past, cute artwork in the room, and a bar and restaurant on site. Having multiple entrances is useful depending on how you arrive, and the staff welcomed us on arrival and departure. Still, I’m not sure why this is advertised and priced as a four-star hotel. There was even a resort/services fee despite no free meal, internet, or similar offering. I didn’t see many luxury items beyond the nice Beekman toiletries. The room was too small, with a queen or king bed leaving you practically against the walls. The bathrooms were nice but had no tub. There were no blackout curtains or smart TV, and many rooms don’t have a special view.

I asked for a room with a bigger desk so I could work, and they accommodated me. It was quieter than my previous room, but not as comfortable. It was very dark even with all the lights on, the bed sagged, and the floor vibrated like there was a Subway train under the bathroom. The bed wasn’t totally uncomfortable, though. This was my second stay. Last time the room was amazing, although a little loud because it was close to the street and the bar across from it. The restaurants are good and the service is wonderful. The location and food make it worth staying, but I’ll mention the problems and hope they add more light sources and fix the bedding.
