Howard Johnson Hotel by Wyndham Newark Airport

The place was filthy, and I wouldn't recommend it. There were burned holes in the shower curtain, stained towels with hair on them, holes in the walls around bad fixtures, and carpets that looked like they hadn't been deep-cleaned in years. The doors all said non-smoking, but the people next door smoked without a problem. If I could give zero stars, I would.

Once I got there, the room was very nice, though the dresser drawers slid open on their own and hit my knees as I walked by. Finding the hotel took a while, even with Google mapses help: there are lots of turns, and the signs don't match the directions from the bot. The online price, even booked through the hojo's chain, was increased by $2 for a “safe fee” for the safe in every room. At checkout they said they'd refund it to my card, so I'll see whether they follow through before deciding if I need to revise this review. It was an affordable overnight stop on my drive south on 95, and I'd consider staying again if I'm in the area.

We had little choice after weather delays left a room near Newark airport and the surrounding towns hard to find at 2 am. If I'd had a choice, I wouldn't have booked this place. The room was dated and dirty, and there were October 2025 boarding passes still tucked under the mattress. The bathroom had stains, long blond hair in the tub and sink, and a towel marked with black stains, like someone had wiped shoes on it. I have black hair less than one inch long, so the hair wasn't mine. The front desk has bulletproof windows, and the location is crappy too.

The room was terribly unclean. There was hair on the pillowcases and bathroom towels, plus a dirty rag left on the shower rod. For this quality, the hotel is much too expensive. Housekeeping needs better standards or retraining.
