We only needed a clean, quiet place for a shower and about eight hours of sleep while passing through. The hotel was close to the interstate and we knew it was dated. We arrived just before 2 a.m. after booking, and the check-in already felt like a bother: our keys didn't work, the desk staff seemed frustrated, and they moved us to a different room. I've stayed almost exclusively at Marriott because of the service and quality, but this was far below what I expected. The new room smelled moldy. Things were falling apart, the door lock wiggled and was missing a screw, and there was mold all over the shower curtain. Water damage was obvious around the hotel, with wallpaper peeling and areas blocked off. Since it was so late and we already felt like an inconvenience to the only staff member on duty, we didn't raise it then. In the morning I tried to explain the problems at checkout, but was told to leave the key in a basket. Three staff members stayed seated behind another desk, and I decided it wasn't worth pursuing. This place needs either to be torn down or repaired extensively. I wish we hadn't stayed, and wouldn't recommend it. The powdered eggs looked like eggs but didn't taste like them. Most items were still in their original plastic packaging, thankfully, because I wouldn't recommend eating anything made there.
The property is under renovation, but that doesn't excuse the lack of management. Basic safety and maintenance issues were everywhere: the room phone was dead, the side entrance wouldn't shut, the exit sign was broken, and the toilet kept refilling from a leaky flapper. The shower soap dispenser was broken, some room lights didn't work, and the old fixtures were tarnished. The thermostat looked like a grade schooler had installed it. Breakfast was in rough shape too. The coffee was lukewarm and weak, there was no catch plate so it had puddled on the counter, the sink was filthy, and there were no spoons. The egg warmer held only scraps, the meat warmer was empty, and a leaked honey packet had stuck the others together. There was even a paint can on the breakfast counter. The exit area looked especially neglected: carpet was poorly fitted and could trip someone, the worn door had a scratched, ancient-looking kickplate, and wallpaper was coming loose. The wall AC installation there was unfinished, with screws left on top. Trash and beer cans were outside that exit. This does not meet the Marriott standard.
The one thing this property has going for it is its relatively low nightly rate. The pool area looks permanently closed, breakfast is minimal, and during my planned 37-day stay it didn't open on time because staffing was low. There were several broken items in my room, and traffic noise was awful on two sides because the hotel sits right by a cloverleaf interchange between two interstates. I travel a lot for business and personally as a lifetime Platinum member, so I know Marriott properties well. This one isn't delivering the brand's usual experience. The area seems to be struggling after the nearby Crossroads Mall closed and several financial collapses. It looks as though the owners are spending as little as they can on upkeep while waiting to be bought out, perhaps in the hope that the Crossroads area will eventually be revitalized. You can see the neglect before even entering. Front desk staff seem restricted from fixing things or replacing broken and missing room items.
We stayed only because a family friend had booked rooms for our group. If it had been up to us, we'd have left right away. The second room they eventually gave us was a little cleaner, but it still had a horrible musty smell and red sludge coming up from the shower drain. The first room felt filthy and unsafe. The carpet was ripped, the lampshades were broken, the walls stained, and the shower curtain had black mold growing on it. The bed was worst of all: the sheets were dirty, and when we pulled them back to change them ourselves, the stains and smell were horrifying. The clerk tossed us fresh sheets and hurried off, saying he was the only staff member there. When we asked to switch rooms, he was rude and said they were “100% full,” though he eventually moved us. This place was run down and disgusting. Stay away.
This was the worst Marriott I've stayed at, and I'm a loyal customer. The location felt unsafe and desolate, and the rooms were badly aged, with ripped furniture and carpet. Everything was dirty and smelled bad, just as other guests have described. We stayed one night because it was too late to switch hotels, then checked out immediately. They cancelled without giving us any trouble. They know it's a dump. How is Marriott managing this place? Stay far away.
