Clarion Collection Wilkie's Inn Pacific Grove - Monterey

I was worried at first because this place was listed as a 2-star hotel, but after staying there I can't see why it rates so low. It felt a bit like stepping back in time. The guest directory was a nice touch, and that's where I learned that monarchs migrate to Pacific Grove's Butterfly Trees. I also appreciated that the shampoo listed its ingredients, so I could check it was phenoxyethanol-free because I'm allergic to that preservative. The cozy room had a solid wood king bed that was wonderfully comfortable, plus two extra chairs so we didn't have to sit on the bed all the time. The refrigerator was larger than usual, and they used ceramic coffee mugs and real water glasses instead of disposables. I loved staying here.

The room was comfortable and clean, and the towels were probably the softest I've ever had at a hotel. The woman who checked me in, though, wasn't friendly or much help, and got a little rude when I asked about a double charge. It was corrected with a refund. For breakfast, there's cereal and other things, but no hot food. I'd go somewhere else for that.

A decent place overall, though a basic motel felt a little expensive. Our room was roomy and the bed was comfortable, and it was handy for 17 mile Drive and the Pacific Grove shops and restaurants. Breakfast was limited but nice. The woman at the desk was a bit short with us after our long drive, so it wasn't the warmest welcome.

The room was clean, and the TV worked well with a good range of channels. The refrigerator was set so cold that it froze a couple of sodas, but that wasn't a big deal. Getting the door lock to work took patience and a bit of finesse, whichever of the two keys I used. Otherwise, no complaints. Pretty good for the money.
