The room was technically clean, and the outside looked neat, with what seemed like fairly recent siding or paint. The parking area could use clearer guidelines. Check-in was behind a locked door with a doorbell, and there wasn't much of a lobby. That was about all the good. I booked online without paying, but after check-in they demanded a $25 cash deposit instead of holding my card. I had to get cash at the 7-11 two doors down, which felt sketchy. The woman at check-in asked six times if I had pets, even after I said repeatedly it was just me. An older man barely opened the door to take my money and was guarded and unpleasant. The woman was pleasant, though not exactly friendly. I take photos before bringing in my luggage, and they show what the room was like. The mini fridge seemed to be the newest thing there, and it was clean and very cold, which I appreciated after this mistake. The door had a huge gap around it, including half an inch at the bottom, so it was impossible to keep the room at a steady temperature. The climate control kept cycling on and off all night and woke me repeatedly. At dawn I woke up thinking the door was open. I even considered wedging a chair under the knob, especially after reading reports of the owner walking in. The bathroom made the stay worse. The old sink was chipped and stained and dripped constantly. It looked so gross that I didn't trust the water, so I skipped brushing my teeth before leaving. The shower floor tiles were uneven and didn't drain, leaving me standing in a puddle. I had to step out and put my feet back in to rinse them, and water seemed to run into a gap between the floor and wall instead of the drain. Two soap discs from previous guests were left on a stained, dirty, corroded shelf above the showerhead. The toilet was clean, at least. There was no vent fan and no window screen, and the window looked onto a street and apartment complex, so anyone could see you showering. If I hadn't been exhausted from travel, I would've demanded a refund and gone elsewhere. I read the reviews too late and tried to give the place the benefit of the doubt, since what I saw wasn't as bad as some reports. Then I tried the TV: it worked, but there seemed to be no cable. My spare HDMI cable let me use my laptop, but there was no Wi-Fi password. I didn't want to call the desk after my earlier experience, so I used 75% of my monthly hotspot allowance on one movie. The bed was hard and bouncy, and the pillows were mismatched, one dense memory foam and one fluffy filler. The booking rate was the same as online, but I wouldn't stay again.
The front desk staff are both amazing. They do their best, and I've had pleasant stays each time I've visited Portland for my needs. I've stayed a couple of times and plan to return. The location works well for me, and even when there's been an issue, they've been kind and tried to accommodate me. One room had no hot water, but they moved us to another one where it worked. The keys don't work very often, and they're waiting for renovations and updates.
It's a small place, but you can catch the bus and explore the area. “Hop” is your best friend. The people at the counter are so helpful. Try not to bother them after hours like I did. They'll help, but you'll feel like a butt for asking. They're great people.
In 50 years of traveling, this may be the worst hotel I've stayed at. The room smelled of urine and mold, and the bedspread was filthy. The phone didn't work. The TV had no signal, and it was connected through a six-outlet box plugged into the wall with a ground lift, since there were no grounded outlets in the room. The remote was sticky, and the weak Wi-Fi dropped every couple of minutes. Mold was on the shower ceiling and curtain, the hot water knob came off in my hand, and the sink had no hot water. There was also a big hole in the bathroom door. I don't know how this place is allowed to stay open, or how it got a three-star rating.
I went earlier today thinking this place might be nice. It wasn't. There were used needles in the parking lot and people being screamed at. They first wanted $25 for me to get into the room, then changed it to $40. The smell was awful, like something was dying. The people there were barefoot with their feet on the tables and desk. They hadn't told me before I arrived that I'd have to pay more, and they were disrespectful and rude. They also said they'd come into my room unannounced in the morning even if I was asleep. I didn't feel comfortable staying, so I left and went to a friend's house. They refused a refund and argued with us for about 30 minutes, then said we'd need to get a refund somewhere else. Budget in Portland west needs to close immediately. The online pictures don't match the place. Be warned, they scam you. They will also steal your stuff while you're away and put it in their own house as theirs. Where should I report this?
