My wife came down with the flu, so we couldn’t take the getaway for two that I’d booked for this evening. I made the reservation 48 hours ahead and told the Marriott the day before that she was very sick. They said it wasn’t their problem because cancellations had to be made 48 hours in advance. I explained that we usually book through them and that this was serious, then asked to speak with the GM. The concierge said they’d call when the GM got to me, but also that they might not call at all. I work in customer service and know that life can bring unexpected situations. It’s a shame to treat someone with such disdain over a few hundred dollars. I’ve yet to stay here, and after this, I’m not sure I would.
I travel often and work closely with other frequent travelers, and this hotel has a negative reputation among many of them. Based on my own visit, I won’t recommend it and will look elsewhere next time. My stay at the Portland Marriott fell well short of what I expect from a Marriott. They didn’t honor the promised government rate, which was very disappointing. I’ve stayed at many other Marriott properties and never had that problem. After a long travel day, the cafeteria staff also refused my food order even though I arrived about five minutes before the kitchen’s posted closing time. The parking was another major frustration: valet costs $54 a day, but the staff often weren’t there when I arrived. I had to wait or go back inside to tell the front desk someone needed to take my car, which defeats the point of valet.
That meal was a pretty rough way to spend Valentine's Day. We got stuck by the checkout waiting area at a wobbly table with chairs that seemed nearly broken. The food was yogurt and fruit salad with some greens, cold pot roast, and a cheesecake that looked like it had fallen apart. Very "Portland," I guess. I've needed a few days to cool off before putting this into words. The staff are doing their best to keep the place going, and my date was gracious and kind. We both hate complaining when it isn't all the staff's fault. Still, don't spend your money at this corporate sinkhole.
My wife was already at the hotel and on our reservation, but the front desk wouldn't let her into the M lounge because I hadn't arrived yet. The staff came across as rude and uninterested in customer service. I booked as a Titanium Elite member, and she's Gold. I figured they'd make an exception for loyal business travelers, but apparently status doesn't matter here. Marriott has lost a customer.
The rooms are super clean, and it's lovely waking up to those views of Mt Hood and real espresso in the morning. I can't think of anything I dislike about the place. Service is wonderful from valet to check-in to the restaurant. Terry is a gem behind the bar, and Jose in the lounge is so attentive and considerate. This review is long overdue, because I love this hotel!
