Heather at the front desk made a tough week feel a little easier. She was kind, patient, and helpful every time I came in, always greeting me with a warm smile. Our family of five and two dogs had been driving home from a funeral in California when the car broke down, so our unplanned two-night stay at the Riverfront Inn in Roseburg came at a stressful, emotional time. The three-bedroom space gave us room to spread out and catch our breath. We happened on the hotel by accident, but it turned out to be just what we needed. Heather deserves a raise.

I wouldn't return. We had two rooms, both smelling like dogs, so we had to air them out when we arrived. They were filthy too: room 307 had webs in the corner by the curtains, and bugs, some dead and some alive, including stink beetles, were in the window. The heater in 307 was nearly broken, with some buttons missing, but the woman working that night came right up and got it going. She checked us in and was very nice. In 308, the shower knob didn't work. We told the woman on duty at 10:45 a.m. the next morning, sometime between 10 and 11, but she wasn't friendly and didn't seem to care about either the dirty rooms or the shower. The beds were extremely comfortable, and the private balcony was nice. I also appreciated the young man who helped carry my suitcase down the stairs. The location is fine, right by the road, though the noise is to be expected. There's no elevator across the three levels, and the parking lot gets busy in the evening. I've been traveling for mystery shops, and I wouldn't recommend this place. The only good part was the nice woman working the evening of 10-10.

Breakfast is quite basic, though they do have hard-boiled eggs, yogurt, bread, and a choice of coffees. We liked being only a few blocks from downtown, and there's a little promenade of its own along the river. Our room was spacious and very clean, with a lovely river view and private balcony. Heather and Ann were especially welcoming and friendly, and went out of their way to make our stay a good one.

We got into the room late, and the first thing we noticed was hair all over the comforter. They changed the linens, but the replacement comforter had hair on it too. The room was hardly stocked, so we had to ask for toilet paper right away. The bathroom was so dirty, and full of hair, that nobody in our party would use the shower. We were genuinely worried about getting athlete's foot. The air conditioner didn't work at all. It was basically just an air blower, and everyone woke up drenched in sweat after a miserable, sleepless night. We had checked in at 4:30 p.m., an hour and a half after the official check-in time, and the room still wasn't ready. That should have warned us. I felt more comfortable leaving than staying. This was horrible, and we're never coming back. If I could give zero stars, I would. Don't waste your money here. It felt filthy and uncomfortable.

This was the tenth hotel on our trip, and we really liked it. The rooms were clean and well priced, and the woman who checked us in was friendly and helpful. She even suggested a great place for dinner. It's also close to Winston safari, which we'd recommend, and makes a good starting point for the drive up 138 to crater lake.
