InterContinental Mark Hopkins by IHG

On my second visit to this elegant old hotel, the exterior was under maintenance, but it didn’t seem to disrupt things. We arrived late, and Roy at reception handled us on his own while also dealing with what looked like a large wedding. He carefully explained what had changed since our last stay and went through all the details. He also graciously upgraded us.

I stayed six nights, hoping for the usual consistent comfort I’ve found at Intercontinental hotels, but this one didn’t meet that standard. The beds and pillows were frankly bad, and they didn’t provide water bottles. On top of the taxes and fees charged when booking, there were about $45 a night in various hidden fees. Apparently lots of hotels in the city do this.

The rooms feel incredibly dated. The handle on my shower came off in my hand. The top of the Mark bar was decent, and the Nob Hill location had scenic views with easy walks to good neighbourhoods. I don’t expect much from hotel gyms, but it was still shocking that this one didn’t even have a treadmill.

Cora brought something I’d left in the room straight down to the desk, so I could get it right away. That was so kind, especially since I’d already tipped her well. We loved our stay and the location. The drink machine could use attention, and the ice machines should work on every floor.
