I spent a long business trip at Hotel Emblem, and it was easy to settle in. The literary feel, colorful details, and cozy style give the place character without making it feel stuffy. My room was clean and comfortable, the bed was great, and it stayed surprisingly quiet despite being so near Union Square. The lounge and lobby worked well for reading, getting a drink, or working. The book-lined lobby, digital fireplace, comfortable seating, and reliable WiFi also made a good spot to meet clients. The ground-floor cafe and bar were a real plus. I liked the smoothies and seasonal drink specials, and there are plenty of restaurants, shops, and transit options within walking distance. Most of all, the staff were attentive and helpful at every turn. Hotel Emblem felt both like a boutique hotel and a genuinely welcoming place. I’d stay again for work or a weekend in San Francisco.

We booked this through "day break hotels" because our flight wasn't until 10 pm. Check-in was at noon and we left at 7. Being just around the corner from Union Square made it easy for my wife to do some last-minute shopping. The room was cozy, with a bath, a very comfortable bed, and a well-stocked fridge. Water was for sale at the price you'd expect, and the whole place had a really hygge feel. We didn't try the food or drinks, though there's an attached cafe and I think happy hour runs from 4 to 5.

The cleanliness was unacceptable, especially for what I paid just to walk in the door. There was trash scattered through the building, sticky surfaces, and upholstery that smelled bad. I work in hospitality, so I know things can happen, but this seemed to be a pattern. When I pointed out the trash on the floor right in front of the receptionist, she deflected by asking when I had checked in. There may be potential here for a five-star stay, but this wasn't one. On top of that, I noticed an unauthorized charge on my credit card today.

My impression of Hotel Emblem was already good before I’d even arrived, thanks to Mandy on the front desk/reservations line. I’d booked a week several weeks ahead but never got a confirmation email. I searched my inbox and spam folder with every keyword I could think of, couldn’t remember the hotel’s name, and assumed the booking had failed, so I made other plans. A confirmation finally showed up much later, and I contacted the hotel. Even though it was past the regular 72-hour cancellation window, Mandy patiently listened, recognized the delayed confirmation as a tech glitch, and helped sort things out. She was gracious and professional, and her understanding made a stressful double booking much easier to handle. I’m now looking forward to staying there on my next San Francisco visit. If the in-person service matches the care she showed on the phone, I expect a great stay.

The room was compact but comfortable, and it worked well for my group during Portola Music Fest weekend. I especially liked the bathroom cleanliness, which was better than I’d expected. The staff were professional and accommodating, too. A fun surprise was the small but mighty set of amenities: we used both the essential oil diffuser and the starry night light. Just don’t expect a huge room.
