I had a wonderfully relaxing stay at The Layne Hotel and would definitely return. It’s a charming little boutique hotel, very quiet and well maintained, about 2.5 blocks from Union Square and Macys. Randy and all the staff were professional and friendly. Wi-Fi is included, and plenty of shops, stores, and restaurants are within walking distance.

The building may be old, but the facilities look barely worn, and the bathrooms and toilets are kept clean. My room was small but bright, tidy, and comfortable, with clean wooden floors, fresh sheets and towels, a thick mattress, and a choice of pillows. I slept really well. There was a fridge and TV, plus soap by the bedroom sink, an ironing board, hangers, and a hair dryer. The hotel sits between touristy Union Square and the Tenderloin, where the streets can be dirty and have homeless people and people with drug addictions. That didn’t affect the service inside. The staff were caring and offered route suggestions and streets to avoid before I even asked. There’s a solid gate and a receptionist on duty around the clock, so only guests can enter. I’ve stayed in plenty of San Francisco hostels, and this is one of the nicest. They do have rules, including no smoking and no guests, and they enforce them. The $250 deposit and rules were clearly explained in the contract. I understand owners wanting to look after the property and keep a pleasant environment in this neighborhood. I booked through Booking.com without trouble, and they responded promptly in the app chat.

Layne made check-in easy and was kind and informative. My room was spotless, with a comfortable bed, clean bathroom, and even a mini fridge, which many boutique hotels don’t have. For this price, I don’t think you’ll find the same elsewhere. I’ve stayed at quite a few boutique hotels in San Francisco, and check-in problems or cleanliness issues are usually part of the deal. I’m glad I didn’t let the negative reviews put me off. The location isn’t ideal, but I felt safe walking around and the building is very secure. I’ll stay here again next time I’m in San Francisco.

I spent only about nine hours a night at the hotel, and it worked well for that. The staff were very sweet and helpful, and the rooms were clean and reasonably comfortable. There’s no AC, but opening the window was enough. It was a little noisy, as you’d expect in a city. As a woman traveling alone, I might have picked a better location since it’s on the edge of a rough part of SF, but I was fine.

It’s convenient for exploring the city, with bars, restaurants, and public transport close by, and the room itself was clean, comfortable, and perfect. Service was OK. But the block around the hotel has a lot of homeless people and people with drug addictions, and walking there was honestly frightening. If I’d known, I would have chosen somewhere else.
