The staff at the front desk and bar were friendly, and the location is convenient for walking down State Street to restaurants and activities. The pool looked nice, the gym was better than the tiny hotel gyms you often see, and the recently upgraded room had a microwave. But there were a lot of problems during my stay. Ants spread across the desk, bathroom, and my belongings, even though I had no food or snacks in the room. I showed the front desk videos and was told someone would come set baits, but nobody showed up. Housekeeping also missed my every-other-day request during my five-day stay; I had to remind them on day four. The toilet was very wobbly, the shower had only a fixed head, and its glass door kept sliding open. My room was close to the street, so traffic was loud, and I’d recommend bringing earplugs. It was also bright at night even with the curtains pulled, making sleep difficult without an eye mask. At 7 a.m., staff woke me with three phone calls and then banging on the door. I couldn’t answer and still don’t know what that was about. For the cost, I’d look elsewhere.

Jesús made our stay at Courtyard by Marriott Santa Barbara Downtown feel special. His warmth and customer service stood out, and he went out of his way to make sure we felt comfortable and cared for throughout the day. A hotel can be nice, but the way the staff treats you is what stays with you. Jesús brought such positive energy, and I’m really grateful for his effort.

The staff were friendly, professional, and seemed sincere. We often had to ask twice, but when something did get handled, it was done well. The rooms and hallways were clean, the hallways are wide, and the hotel has a relaxed feel. There’s plenty of parking underneath, including four third-party EV chargers. I’d stay again for the price, especially with great food nearby. The restaurant was filthy and sticky, and the food was low quality and very basic. Its website claims the ingredients are locally sourced and fresh, which didn’t match what we got. Even the citrus wasn’t freshly squeezed there. The hotel itself had maintenance problems too: the elevators were out when we arrived and again during part of our stay, and our broken thermostat meant the HVAC never got fixed over the week. We carried our bags for four up three flights ourselves, since nobody offered to help. Still, this seemed about standard for a lower-priced Marriott Bonvoy hotel, so I didn’t count it against my review. No bed bugs, either.

The room linens were stained, which was shocking to see under a white bedspread. When I called for fresh ones, the front desk didn’t apologize. I also had Marriott status and had requested both early check-in and late checkout, but neither request had been recorded, and I wasn’t offered the complimentary waters at check-in. The hotel has a 24-hour Starbucks coffee machine. The dark roast I wanted had run out, so I told the front desk. She said she needed to refill the beans, but then stayed on her phone instead of helping. I ended up choosing another coffee. Between that and the room cleanliness, I wasn’t impressed with the service.

Update 2026/01/28, 4 Stars due to sincere resolution: After my stay, management contacted me, acknowledged what happened, and offered a fair fix: a full refund of the points I’d used plus additional goodwill points. I appreciate how professionally they handled it afterward, and hope they improve room assignments and sound insulation. Original 2026/01/24, 1 Star. I stayed one night as a Marriott Bonvoy Platinum member, a few days before my birthday, and the hotel left a small card and some snacks in my room, which I appreciated. But the room was right beside the air-conditioning compressor, with an intermittent low hum all night that made it hard to rest. There was no upgrade or other meaningful recognition, and the room felt like a basic business hotel room. Despite “Downtown” in the name, the property felt isolated, with little dining or shopping within walking distance. A car felt essential, and parking was a concern when returning at night. There was no complimentary breakfast, breakfast credit, or substantial welcome gift. I understand that may fit the brand policy, but the value was disappointing. The points used were worth roughly US$530, which felt like a poor deal given the noise, lack of upgrade, and limited recognition. The stay offered little comfort or value, and the hotel felt functional at best and overpriced. I wouldn’t choose it again as an elite member.
