The German Memorial Fountain honors German immigrants who helped shape Savannah. This Historic Square was established in 1815 and commemorates General Andrew Jackson’s victory at the Battle of New Orleans during the War of 1812. There are benches to relax on around the pool and fountain, which lights up from within at night. Dogwood and Oak trees add to the lovely setting, with striking residential architecture along one side. It’s one of Savannah’s 23 squares still in existence. A lot of the others have monuments and fountains too.

Walking around Savannah’s squares made for the best afternoon. There are 22 of them, and Orleans was a favorite of mine, with its big fountain and all that amazing Spanish moss!

We ended up coming back to Orleans Square during our visit, even though we saw twenty-two of the squares around town. It’s a good size, with benches and a lovely fountain right in the middle.
