The Davenport Tower, Autograph Collection

The view was beautiful, almost enough to redeem the stay, but the value just wasn’t there and we won’t return. Check-in was easy and the room looked clean, though it was disappointing. They said it had recently been renovated, but it didn’t seem ready. The fridge was dead, and the TV or its remote didn’t work. There was no toilet paper, though someone brought some up quickly. The fireplace looked nice but didn’t seem to give off heat. The washcloths had stains, and tape from the fresh paint was still on the wall. We woke early to footsteps from upstairs, then the shower ran cold the next morning.

Braxton at the front desk was excellent, and the employees I saw all looked professional and proud to work there. The Tower is clean and well kept, though it isn’t new; its lobby has the safari theme, and the building is 22 floors. I think some reviews mix it up with the other Davenports nearby. The hotel has a bit of old-fashioned character, which I enjoyed. The biggest issue for me was the bed. It was so soft and cushy that it felt like one giant pillow or a loose hammock. I sank into the middle all night like a cooked shrimp, which was awful on my back and agonizing on my side. The very tall pillows made it worse. I kept picturing those mattress ads with a red circle around a misaligned spine. I was in town for work, and it really hurt my performance. I’m in my early 30s, so maybe I’m not the target guest, who knows. I can’t stay here again and will book somewhere else. The room was spacious but basic, with some upscale fixtures, a generic mini-fridge and coffee maker, and no microwave. I didn’t hear the neighbors. The shower was large and open, with good pressure and hot water. The HVAC wasn’t responsive to the thermostat; there was a typical lower window unit, so I assumed the room was being tempered by ducted air instead. Parking isn’t included: it’s $35 for valet or $28 a day to self-park in the garage across the street. Breakfast is extra too, at $20+ from the restaurant. I didn’t ask the desk for incidentals or toiletries, but saw a toiletries and supplies vending machine near the pool. Nothing seemed to be included. That nickel-and-diming detracted from the stay, though I can see that the base rate may be modest for a “4-star hotel.” The pool was well kept and a nice novelty, if not extraordinary. The gym was the usual nearly useless hotel setup, but its treadmill was sturdy commercial grade and in pleasantly good condition.

I booked for the hot tub, and it worked, lol. The pool was heated too, and the gym had some decent equipment. The hotel looked just like the pictures, and my guest liked it as much as I did. I was there a few days for work and really enjoyed the place. The corner room had good views and a fireplace, and I liked getting coffee in the morning. The food was good, room service most of the time, and the bartender made a great evening drink. The market was handy when I needed energy drinks. When I ran into an issue, they dealt with it right away, which I appreciated. I hear they’ll be renovating soon. I’ll be interested to see it, though I’m sad the mirrors above the beds are coming down. I liked them. Maybe they could keep some in a few rooms? Thanks.

Valet was wonderful, and the downtown location puts you close to everything. The hotel was beautiful, clean, and spacious, with a really comfortable bed. There was some noise at night, probably because of the hotel’s age.
