The Mayflower Hotel in Washington, DC, now the Mayflower by Marriott, has been part of the city’s social and political life for a century. Opened in 1925 as a grand gathering place, it has welcomed presidents, dignitaries, artists, and travelers. Its Beaux-Arts design and ornate interiors recall the European palaces that inspired it. Presidents from Calvin Coolidge onward have stayed there, and Franklin D. Roosevelt reportedly worked on his first inaugural address at the hotel. It has hosted inaugural balls, historic meetings, and private conversations tied to U.S. history, while also serving as a meeting place for Hollywood stars, royalty, and visitors from around the world. With its chandeliers, richly decorated ballrooms, and classic hospitality, the Mayflower still feels connected to its past while offering modern luxury. Walking inside is like stepping through a century of stories, where history and the present meet in a quiet, elegant way.

The hotel was clean, and check-in went smoothly, but the rooms had no drinking water. Hospitality basics seem to be a struggle for management here. The room was clean, though it lacked both toiletries and water, and the staff were attentive but slow. My overall stay was average. Parking is valet only, at $70, with no self-parking. If you care about your car, this may not be the hotel for you. Since even getting water seemed like an issue, we decided to eat somewhere nearby rather than try the restaurant.

The rooms are very spacious, and the staff were extremely courteous. Bobby in particular went out of his way to help us feel at home.

The location is great, with all the main monuments within walking distance. The rooms are clean and spacious, and the service is good. As you’d expect, it’s expensive.

We had a weekend getaway from NY last week and loved the grand lobby. Our suite was clean and comfortable, with two bathrooms. Carla made the stay even better by calling the morning of our reservation to offer us a larger room and accommodate our needs. Sam also deserves a shoutout for friendly, excellent customer service.
