Windsor Inn Hotel

I never stayed there. After making a reservation, I had a question and called every day for more than a week. Nobody answered, I couldn’t leave a message, and my emails got no response. I also contacted the company I booked through, Hostel world, by email since they don’t take phone calls, but got no reply there either. I canceled my reservation.

The neighborhood is safe and convenient, which is the main reason I’d recommend this quirky little place. It’s no-frills, but fine for a budget stay if you’re not picky. Just be aware it isn’t wheelchair accessible. My basement room was right by a door to the alley, yet it stayed quiet and dark. The AC kept it comfortable, and check-in and checkout were easy. A few things were broken, like the towel hook, but everything was clean enough and usable. They took a $150 deposit on my credit card and returned it before I would’ve had to pay the bill.

The biggest challenge for me was not having a private fridge. I have dietary restrictions and need to travel with my own food. There is a shared refrigerator, but it’s managed on the honor system. Parking also takes planning: the nearest garage is .5 miles away at 16th and P. There are no ramps or elevators, so heavy luggage is a hassle, though the friendly staff were willing to carry it up and down the stairs. Booking sites may not make the need to climb a floor obvious, so keep that in mind. Business travelers may find the challenges outweigh the price. The hotel is a quaint boutique spot in a lovely historic building and a safe neighborhood. Staff were kind and helpful to travelers. The room paint was peeling and the furniture needs updating, but the bed was more comfortable than I expected even though it was firmer than I’m used to. I slept well, and the AC kept the heat under control.

It was comfortable and suited what I needed. The older hotel has some charm, and the price is reasonable for the area. Restaurants, public transit, and the main sights are all fairly close. Just plan to eat out, since they don’t serve breakfast or other meals. A solid budget option for a DC visit.
