We stopped here for one night on motorbikes. The quiet surroundings were peaceful, with beautiful scenery and nature sounds, good WiFi, and a place to park the bikes, though it probably only fits 3-4. The rooms were decent and there were hammocks. The food was average, and hot water worked well but ran out quickly. The host seemed friendly on the surface, but kept pushing boat tours even after we repeatedly said we weren’t interested. There were countless mosquitoes, and no screens or mosquito net. Our room was open and full of them when we arrived. I was charged 1 million dong for two small loads of laundry, lunch of instant noodles, fried eggs, cucumber and one dragonfruit, dinner of grilled meat, rice, spring rolls and soup, breakfast of rice noodles, fruit and maybe something else I can’t remember, four Vietnamese coffees, and somewhere between 6 and 10 Hanoi beer cans. There was no itemized bill, just a request for 1 million dong. I paid without haggling because everyone else we’d dealt with in Vietnam had been honest and provided an itemized bill. We’ve stayed at several similar Airbnbs with better service, where we ordered more food and paid less for multiple nights in larger cities. I’d stay here if I couldn’t find another option, but I’d suggest looking at other homestays. I wouldn’t return.

That hammock with the mountains and rice fields behind it was such a lovely place for an afternoon nap, and the setting is quiet and beautiful. The host was friendly and helpful, the bathroom and toilet were clean, the sheets and mattress were clean, and there was toilet paper and reliable hot water. The AC worked fine too. He helped us rent a two-wheeler and arrange transport to our next stop. The mattress itself was too hard for a comfortable night's sleep. We ate dinner and breakfast there, and both were disappointing for the price. I can give dinner some leeway since we don't eat meat and the host didn't know how to prepare vegetarian options, but breakfast wasn't good either. Vietnamese bread and egg were better and much cheaper elsewhere.

The garden is lovely, the rooms are clean and comfortable, and Yen's is such a peaceful place to stay. We felt right at home, even spotting an adorable bird sleeping outside our room. Our host was one of the most welcoming people I've met. He greeted us with fresh pineapple juice, brought little snacks like fresh peanuts and green tea on other occasions, and cooked us a great breakfast every day. He also shared a map of the area and arranged bicycle rentals, which he even offered to provide for free.

Trang An was a great base, surrounded by mountains and still not far from central Ninh Binh or many of the tourist sites. We stayed four nights. The host was really nice and arranged a motorcycle, laundry, and buses back to Hanoi for our departure. For breakfast, there's a buffet at a nearby Homestay, just a few minutes away by car, for 50,000 Dong.

Hoi cooked breakfast and dinner for us each day, and it was tasty with enough variety that we didn't get tired of it. We spent three nights in his beautiful place among the mountains and farmland and had a wonderful time. He rented us scooters at a very good price for Bai Dinh and the Trang An boat tour, and arranged a driver for a day trip to Cuc Phuong national park. I can't wait to come back to Hoi's and climb the local mountains to see the rare monkeys. You can hear them while you're staying there.
