We spent three days at Tilney Manor before a family wedding, with ten of us coming to enjoy Sanbona Reserve. Kai-Li and her team made us feel welcome from arrival to departure, and were always friendly and ready to help. All six rooms are similarly appointed, with a choice of super king or twin beds that suited our mixed group. They have amazing views, complimentary minibars, AC, and bathrooms with freestanding baths plus indoor and outdoor showers. The food was excellent, with varied menus and a wine list to match, and there's certainly no risk of going hungry. The gardens are well kept, and we enjoyed having the pool available in a spare moment, though the water was cold. Some of us also tried the gym and treatment room and thoroughly enjoyed them. This is a real safari experience: the lodge is about 30km from the main road and only reachable by car over very bumpy tracks at low speed. Anyone with motion sickness or a bad back should be aware.

Everyone was helpful and took good care of us, including handling our gluten-free food needs. Jo-Anne deserves special mention as an outstanding team member. The room was excellent, the views stunning, and the game drives really good. The 5.00 drives were cold, as expected.

For an authentic safari near Cape Town, I found Sanbona through a tour operator and spent three days there in December. The drive from Cape Town takes approximately 3.5 hours. Compared with the smaller reserves in the area, this private reserve offers a genuine safari experience and is closer to Cape Town than others. The reserve and lodges are stunning. Ranger Adrian, the whole service team, the food and the service were excellent. I'm very grateful for the wonderful time and highly recommend Sanbona to anyone looking for an authentic safari and high-quality service near Cape Town.

The animals are a big reason to visit Sanbona, and our guide showed us an incredible number of them: elephant, cheetah, buck, giraffe, jackals and baboons. We learned so much about the fauna, geology and history. The food was superb, with plenty to choose from, and the staff treated us wonderfully, encouraging us to relax while they looked after us. Tilney manor has a gentle charm from another era, with lovely wooden floors and period details. It's a totally unique spot in the middle of nowhere, utterly incredible. This is what dreams are made of.
