Mark and Sheila were so welcoming that we felt at home right away. They were always glad to suggest things to see, places to go, and onward travel options. We’d brought food to cook, but then Mark offered to host a pizza night using their pizza oven. We had to decline, and were gutted about it. Thanks to Mark and Sheila, and their lovely dog Bella, for such a great stay. The Royal Rat Hostel was the best hostel we stayed at on our trip. We loved our three nights there. It’s thoughtfully set up, with a well-stocked kitchen, spotless bathrooms, towels and shower amenities in the room, and a lovely pool. The free bikes made it easy to cycle into town, and the beach is only about a three-minute walk. I also spent hours watching the different birds at the active hummingbird feeder. The room did get pretty hot at night. Mark gave us an extra fan, which helped, though it was still warm. We wish more people stayed here, because it’s a special place.

The dorm beds were basic, but good value for the price. The communal areas were great, with a pool, kitchen, lounge, and other spaces to hang out. Placencia’s main town is a little way off, but it’s an easy ride on the free bikes, and hitchhiking is common. The hostel is also next to Placencia’s main rental place. Mark and Sheila did their best to make us feel at home and meet our needs. Games nights, plus a delicious curry and BBQ night, made this one of the highlights of our trip. I’d highly recommend staying here if you’re passing through.

The hosts were friendly and accommodating, and the cabana was comfortable. It had a double bed, a separate room with a bunk bed, and a handy kitchen area. The pool area is enclosed and pleasant. Definitely recommend.

The owners were lovely and arranged one of the best snorkeling tours I did on this trip, including planning it for me. The hostel is gorgeous, clean, and well organized, with a fully equipped kitchen, comfortable beds, and little fans to keep you from overheating. There’s also a swimming pool, and they provide bikes for free. Downtown is about 15 minutes away by bike along a lovely road, and there’s a market seven minutes from the hostel. If it looks full, call them first! I didn’t lack for anything and would recommend this place 200%.

Mark and Sheila are brilliant, and the homemade pizza was a treat. I liked the pool so much that I stayed extra days. It’s an amazing hostel, with great rooms and beds, reliable WiFi, and spotless bathrooms and showers with excellent hot water.
