Banff International Hostel

A month after checkout, my deposit still hadn't come back, so I called. It took staff about 30 minutes to find my booking despite having all my details, and nearly an hour altogether to process a refund that should have been straightforward. At first there was no apology, just repeated attempts to put the responsibility on me, even though I'd followed what staff told me. At check-in, I was clearly told the deposit would be returned a few days after checkout. Nobody said I needed to do anything or that a manual transfer was required. I returned my key card at checkout, and staff said goodbye without mentioning the deposit, so I reasonably expected it to happen automatically. During the month-long wait, I got no call or voicemail, despite the property's later claim that they had contacted me. The property then accused me of being “disrespectful” and said they'd reached out, which simply wasn't true. Being frustrated after a month of delay, poor communication, and inefficient service is reasonable. This was my money, not a bonus or favor. Guests shouldn't have to spend so much time chasing a refund because of internal process failures. I honestly believe the deposit would have stayed unreturned if I hadn't called. I'm writing this in good faith about my real experience. Future guests should be very cautious, especially about deposits.

I hadn't stayed in a hostel for many years and, at 68, I was a bit nervous. From check-in through departure, I was amazed by how helpful and welcoming everyone was. Liam even helped me recover something I'd lost, which made me appreciate the place even more. It's close to everything in Banff and well worth the price. I'd happily recommend it. If it was this much fun for an older person, I can imagine how much younger guests will enjoy it. Thanks again, and well done.

We booked several nights at Banff International Hostel and called ahead to cancel only the first night. When we arrived, staff said the whole booking had been canceled and still tried to charge us. It was treated like normal practice instead of a mistake, and felt dishonest and exploitative. They also told us there was no parking at all and nowhere secure to store luggage, basic services travelers need, especially in Banff where people carry valuable gear. Calling itself an “international” hostel while lacking those fundamentals felt misleading. Staff were dismissive and didn't seem interested in fixing anything. The whole experience made it seem like the business cared more about taking money than offering fair, reliable service. It reflects badly on Banff as a destination. For peace of mind, book somewhere else.

The location is really convenient, and the common area is clean and cozy. Staff are always ready to help. On the way to the airport I realized I might have left my iPad and headphones behind. The staff quickly found them, wrapped them in a towel to keep them safe for shipping, and helped me arrange everything with the manager. I really appreciated that great service.
