Howard Johnson by Wyndham Gananoque

Jessica Warren made a difficult travel disruption much easier. After the airline cancelled our flight at the last minute and moved us to the following day, we could no longer stay at the hotel. We were flying into Toronto and driving on to Ottawa, and the location had been perfect for an overnight stop. I contacted Jessica directly and through Expedia. Although we were already past the free cancellation deadline, she first offered to change the reservation without a fee, then gave us a full refund when she learned we couldn’t stay at all. They weren’t required to do that. The trip was already interrupted and delayed, so it was wonderful to get this kind of customer service. I’d stay at this location or another one of theirs and highly recommend them. Thank you for making a hard situation better.

Staff were friendly and helpful, and you can use the coffee machine any time, which was a nice touch. Breakfast is basic, but they’re upfront about that and it was still pretty good. A solid, no-frills motel for a budget stay, close to the centre of Gananoque.

The room was dirty when we arrived: dusty, with very hard beds, stained towels, and a dirty, stained bathtub. On top of that, housekeeping knocked around 10:00 a.m. to clean, even though checkout was at 11. That was frustrating given the state of the room we’d been given. Staff also couldn’t find our reservation at first and spent a long time looking for it. The stay was extremely disappointing and fell short of basic cleanliness and service expectations. It’s not what I’d expect from a Howard Johnson.

The bed was pretty firm, and I think I slept better on it than I do at home. Our room was clean, the price was good, and the woman who checked us in was really friendly and helpful. Handy location for things in the area, or for visiting Kingston and saving money on a hotel.
