Hotel Royal William, an Ascend Collection Hotel

For the first four days of our five-day Christmas week stay, things went well. The staff were very sweet, and they even serviced our room on Christmas Day. Then, on day five, the service suddenly became pathetic. Housekeeping only cleaned the bathroom, leaving the beds unmade, the trash in place, and no coffee refills. When we raised it at the front desk, they dismissed us and said rooms and trash aren’t cleaned daily. Nobody had mentioned this selective housekeeping rule when we checked in. Very disappointing.

The room was spacious, spotless, and really comfortable, and the hotel is about a 15-minute drive from Quebec City, which made exploring convenient. What stood out even more was the kindness of the staff member who checked us in. I think he was on the night shift, though I’ve forgotten his name. He was welcoming and so helpful, and his service really set the tone for our stay. Thanks for the warm hospitality. We’d happily stay again and recommend the hotel to others.

From the outside, the hotel didn’t look like much, so the size and comfort of our room were a pleasant surprise. Our room, or Lisa room, had a huge bathroom with a separate shower and a big tub, and it was very well appointed. We also ate at the restaurant, I think it’s called Malia, and had one of the best lasagnas I’ve ever eaten. The staff were courteous and friendly. We’d definitely recommend staying here.

We weren’t asked about our stay at checkout, otherwise we would’ve mentioned these issues then. The staff generally seemed unfriendly and unhelpful. Rooms were clean, but small, and the pillows weren’t comfortable. The AC kept tripping even at its lowest setting, 19C, and there was no way to leave the fan on. There’s no hotel parking. The recommended lot is two blocks away, and you have to take your own luggage there. It’s nearly impossible to stop outside to unload, with drivers behind you honking and cursing. The lot they recommend has no EV charging, so you’ll have to find another place yourself if you have an electric car. The location is at least a 30-minute walk from the old town. We wouldn’t recommend it for visiting there unless you’re willing to drive and park or take an Uber. We asked room service for basic utensils, a fork and spoon, and were told they’d have to check if any were available. That felt inappropriate, basic utensils should be provided on request.
