The room rate didn’t include breakfast, but I ate at the hotel restaurant. I only stayed one night. The building is older, and the common area decor is dated but well maintained. My room was clean and comfortable, with an updated bathroom and flooring, plus a comfortable king size bed. The reception staff were welcoming.

I was here with about 90 work colleagues, deep-sea fishermen from the former GDR, for an overnight stay. That was in 1985/86, and I still have only good memories of the hotel. The beds seemed huge to me then. Looking at the pictures now, not much appears to have changed. I thought it was great.

The staff were friendly and efficient, parking was ample, and laundry was free. For the money, it was okay, though the hotel needs updating. The online pictures are somewhat misleading: the building is older, some rooms may have been updated, but ours hadn't. The carpets smelled like smoke.

Four of our crews stayed here for a month during the heavy tourist season. Even with the hotel full, Maria Afonso, the manager, and her staff were always available and ready to help with a smile. Everyone was friendly and willing to go the extra mile, which mattered since some of our guys aren't easy to please. The hotel is a 10 minute drive from downtown, with easy access to amenities and a good restaurant in the building. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Ramada St John's to anyone visiting this beautiful city.
