I found a used tissue and receipt on my bed, which was disappointing, and someone came over around midnight saying it was his bed. I didn’t sleep very well. The toilet was clean, though, so it was fine for just one night. The room was dark when I got there at 8:00 pm, with most people already asleep and snoring loudly. Bring earplugs for sure, lots of people snore here. If cleanliness matters to you, pick another hostel.

The place was quiet and clean, and having clear rules seemed to help everyone get along. I liked the outlets right by the bed, including USB-A, and the small lockers in the rooms are useful if you bring your own padlock. Showers were warm, and bringing your own towel can save some money. I expected less after reading other reviews, but it turned out to be a great stay for the price.

The dorm was awful. There’s nowhere to put a suitcase, the bunks wobble when you climb up, and the pillow was thinner than paper. If you’re a woman traveling alone and want to feel safe, this isn’t the place for you. Getting in and out freely costs a $20 deposit at reception, which is beside the TV room. I didn’t want to wait outside for someone to let me in, but paying 20 bucks for that freedom felt ridiculous. The entrance is on a dark side street that doesn’t feel safe, and you have to haul your suitcase up two steep flights of stairs in a really awkward way, with a risk of falling. I’ve never seen a hostel so ugly and badly maintained. Don’t be fooled by the nice photos, the reality is very different. Worst experience of my life!

I paid a small amount for a room to myself, and it was fine. It’s cheap, the location is really good, and there are plenty of things nearby, so I don’t get the bad comments. I didn’t use the shower, so I can’t say anything about that. The staff were really nice too. I don’t know her name, but I bet she was European, like all the European people I know, super friendly. If I come back to the city, I’ll stay here again.

The bathrooms were reasonably clean and modern, and the rooms are modest. The rooftop deck is the one redeeming feature. The rest feels and looks like a depressing flop house, with old, dirty rugs and walls that are unpainted and grimy. The TV room is right by reception and a sleeping area, and seems to attract undesirable people and behavior. I wouldn’t book through the Parkdale Hostellerie site because it calculates the price wrong. Booking through a booking site gets better rates. Even then, it’s not a great place for more than a night, unless you have to stay there.
