The location sounded like a plus because it’s central, but the hotel is right on a busy nightlife street surrounded by pubs and clubs. Shouting, music, and drunk crowds carried on well past 2 a.m., as if the party were in my room. Thin walls and doors also let in noise from other rooms and pop music at reception during breakfast. Forget sleeping past 8 a.m. The bed setup was a nightmare too. Each person gets one old, flat, worn pillow, and you have to fold it in half to get any height. The beds were uncomfortable, bumpy, and so squeaky that every movement seemed to echo through the building. My room was visibly dirty: dust and crumbs on the side table and sideboard, an unemptied bathroom bin, and shower glass that looked like it hadn’t been properly cleaned in a long time. There was almost no ventilation in the tiny windowless bathroom. The supplied fan just rattled loudly without moving air. I was lucky it was chilly during my stay, because otherwise that would have been unbearable. I got no reply when I messaged through the booking platform several days before check-in to ask about secure bicycle storage. If you need anything, like a hairdryer, call the hotel. I only learned it was kept behind reception after asking in person. Phone calls seem to be the only way to get help. For a budget hotel, the low price still doesn’t make up for the dirt, poor sleep, and constant noise. One night was more than enough. I wouldn’t recommend it unless you’re absolutely desperate, with earplugs and low expectations.

On the evening of April 26th, my father had a stroke while staying at Hotel Elite Garni. He stopped replying to messages, so I called the hotel from two hours away, desperate for someone to check on him. The woman who answered refused, saying she “needed her sleep for energy the next day” and would come only “if the hotel was on fire.” I explained that he’d been unwell for hours and we suspected food poisoning, but she still wouldn’t help. We had to call an ambulance. Paramedics found him going in and out of consciousness and took him to hospital. He’s only 59, and thankfully he’d been messaging us just before he got worse. I dread to think what might have happened if he’d been older or alone. The next day, the same woman acknowledged what happened and said we’d get a refund for the final night, since we’d cleared out the room that evening. But when we returned the key, she changed her mind, saying she was “too tired from all the commotion” and pointing to other guests’ complaints about the paramedics’ noise. She never showed empathy, concern, or remorse. Her response was shockingly cold and unprofessional. The hotel is also in poor condition. The shower looked as if it hadn’t been cleaned in months. This was a dangerous failure of basic human decency, not just bad hospitality. Do not stay here.

The automatic check-in worked great, and the staff and breakfast were good. Rooms and some shared areas weren’t very clean, though. A good value option for the city.

The people are very friendly, but the walls are so thin you can hear a pin drop, and weekends can get noisy. It’s great for a quick trip.

It’s tiny but cosy, right in the centre, and probably one of the cheapest hotels in St. Gallen. The rooms were very clean, and the staff were super friendly and helpful. Breakfast was fresh and healthy, with fruit, bread, fair trade bio jams, and more. This went beyond what I expected. If you don’t need lots of space or luxury, this is the one to go to.
