New Tokyo Hostel

We were charged for a room we never got, and management wouldn’t refund us. We’d booked two rooms for four people at New Tokyo Hostel, but they insisted we’d booked just one. After realizing the mistake, they woke us at 2 a.m. to hand over a key for the other room, then said they wouldn’t return the cost of that room’s first night because the key came so late. The rooms are very small, especially with four people in one, and we had to queue for the elevator. The area also felt dodgy, with people trying to sell drugs right outside. Still, the worst part was the way management handled the room mix-up. I wouldn’t recommend it.

Rooms in Chungking Mansions are small for two, so I booked a room for four with two double beds. New Tokyo Hotel has never let me down. My son and I had lots of space, and the room came with a safe, TV, small fridge, 24-hour phone service, air conditioning, and a fan for anyone who’d rather not use the air conditioning. There was a hair dryer, a clean bathroom with hot and cold water, and an electric thermos pot available 24 hours. The hostel has CCTV security. Here are some photos.

The location was good, the room was clean, and the staff were accommodating enough. They cleaned regularly, but there was a really weird smell. We couldn’t figure out where it came from, and it was bad enough to ruin our stay.

We paid for two rooms but were made to stay in one and share beds. There wasn’t enough bedding, no towels, and no refund. The management was more stubborn than a ferret with a hemorrhoid. In ChungKing mansions, the same gang runs a range of hostels.
