Penzion Štekrův Mlýn

We found this place while looking for traditional Czech food and were served even though we were the only customers. The menu has plenty of choices, from hot and cold starters to mains and desserts. The staff were very friendly, service was quick, and the food was good. I've eaten at better restaurants, but I had a good experience here.

We had lunch outside in the garden beside the horse paddock. The staff were friendly and our food arrived on time. The menu has a range of Czech specialties, including Bohemian dumplings. I had goulash, which was fine, though I personally would have liked more paprika. The restored half-timbered house is a lovely setting. Have a look at the dining room inside, it feels like stepping back to the early 20th century. Two things kept this from getting five points. Smoking in the garden was allowed pretty freely, so people were smoking beside us while we ate, which was annoying. I think it would be better to restrict it to outside lunch and dinner hours. Also, even though prices were affordable, there was about an 8 Euro difference between the bill in Czech Crowns and Euros on a total of around 80 Euros. Paying in Czech Crowns would have cost 8 Euros less. They know Germans will pay in Euros, and that doesn't feel quite right to me. If you can, pay in Czech Crowns.

Breakfast was the highlight of our stay, just phenomenal for us. We got a homey feeling from the moment we arrived by car, and both the farm's location and landscaping are wonderful. The room was nice and clean, if nothing exceptional. The restaurant is old-fashioned in a good way. We tried some desserts, which were good, and of course had beer. The staff hardly speak English, but they're very friendly, so you can sort most things out even if you don't speak Czech or German.

Tucked away a bit in the forest, this was a great find. The Czech tartare was really good, and so was the bread served with it. Good value too.
